WATCH: Ship Scuttled With Two People Still Stuck On
Board! :o

May 23, 2016 by Mike Schuler
The former flagship of the Yugoslav Navy was scuttled in
Croatia’s Polje Bay in spectacular fashion over the weekend
where it will now serve as a dive attraction.
Thousands were on hand to witness the event, which went off
without a hitch. That is unless you consider the two guys who
were still on board when the explosions went off!
Luckily boats in the area raced to save the men as the ship sank
quickly. They survived, but man it was close.

To those who enjoy my posts.
I have been a bit under the weather of late. :(
My wife has been tending to me and I hope to be recovered soon
(hopefully, in about a week), God willing.
Until then, my posts will probably be infrequent. Physical pain
only slightly ameliorated by analgesics, continual discomfort
and lack of sleep inhibit my ability to post. :P
Be well. For a while, I won't be. [img

crew of the Alaska Juris abandoning ship in the Bering Sea,
July 26, 2016. U.S. Coast Guard Image
The U.S. Coast Guard along with good samaritan vessels responded
Tuesday to 46 crewmembers aboard a commercial fishing vessel
who were forced to abandon ship in the Bering Sea near Kiska
Island, approximately 690 miles west of Dutch Harbor, Alaska.
All 46 crewmembers were transferred to the merchants ships Spar
Canis and Vienna Express to be transported to Adak, Alaska.

The U.S. Coast Guard says it received an EPIRB alert from
fishing vessel Alaska Juris around 11:30 a.m. Alaska time and
contacted the crew directly to confirm they were in distress,
donning survival suits and abandoning ship.
The Coast Guard Cutter Midgett and a HC-130 Hercules airplane
from Air Station Kodiak were diverted to the vessel’s location,
while MH-60 Jayhawk helicopters were launched to Adak as a
staging and refueling area.

MH-60 Jayhawk helicopters
Watchstanders also issued an urgent marine information broadcast
to vessels in the area, diverting the motor vessels Spar Canis,
Vienna Express, Seafisher and Ocean Peace to assist.
The quick response led to the rescue of 46 crewmembers without
injury. [img

/>
Weather on scene was reported as calm seas and limited
visibility.
Some video of the rescue released by the Coast Guard is
below:

The cause of the vessel taking on water is under investigation.
“The crew of the Alaska Juris did the right thing by calling for
help, putting on their immersion suits and safely abandoning the
ship,” said Lt. Greg Isbell, District 17 command duty officer.
“Emergencies can occur at any time in Alaska’s vast and extreme
environment, and the good Samaritans’ willingness to respond to
the UMIB was paramount to getting the Alaska Juris crew to
safety.”
Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation is monitoring
the case closely.

WATCH: Tugs Pull Grounded MV Benita From Mauritius

July 27, 2016 by Mike Schuler
A salvage team from Five Oceans Salvage refloats the wrecked MV
Benita from the southern shore of Mauritius, Monday, July 25,
2016.
The ship ran aground June 17, 2016 after a crew member attacked
others on board before locking himself in the engine room, where
he damaged equipment that resulted in the ship losing propulsion
and eventually running aground.

WATCH (at article link): Drone Video Shows How Giant
Containerships Enter Panama Canal’s New Locks
August 9, 2016 by Mike Schuler
Check out this drone video posted by Panama Canal Administrator
Jorge Luis Quijano showing a neopanamax containership entering
the expanded Panama Canal’s new Agua Clara locks from Gatun Lake
on the Atlantic side of the waterway.
Administrator Quijano says the video illustrates the excellent
work by Panama Canal ship pilots, but I actually think the video
does a better job of showing the challenges of maneuvering ships
through the locks using the new tugboat system.
The Panama Canal Authority has been under fire over the
longstanding safety concerns related to the new piloting system,
which as you can see uses tugboats instead of mules
(locomotives) to maneuver ships into and through the locks. A
report released earlier this year by the International Transport
Workers’ Federation seemingly confirmed these concerns even
further, concluding that the safety of maneuverability within
the locks is compromised due to factors such as the locks’
dimensions and insufficient bollard pull of the tugboats under
certain environmental conditions.
Unfortunately for the ACP, these safety concerns were realized
in July when a large China COSCO Shipping containership suffered
a large gash in its hull after hitting a wall while entering the
Agua Clara locks during a northbound transit – basically the
exact same maneuver that is seen in the video above.
But the ACP has mostly dismissed these concerns, and last
weekend met with some of its biggest customers to reiterate
their confidence in the Canal’s operations, the waterway’s
stellar safety record (an incident rate of just 0.1% in FY
2015), and the Panama Canal Authority’s highly-trained
workforce.
At this time it’s hard to say what the future will hold for the
expanded Panama Canal. But in the meantime, let us know what you
think of the new piloting system by sharing and commenting on
social media.
