: a victory for the extreme centre?
Since the end of the Cold War, politics in affluent Western
democracies has become a contest to see who can better serve the
needs of the market.
Rather than left and right parties representing genuinely
different policies, they have converged to create a global
economic order where deregulation, free trade, privatisation
and market-driven solutions hold sway.
Whether voters agree or not, these things are a given, creating
a massive disenchantment with government and a huge challenge to
democracy.
Is this political wisdom or suicide?

The collapse of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) stocks throughout
North-Western Europe is generally ascribed to large-scale river
regulation, water pollution and over-fishing in the 19th and
20th century.
However, other causes have rarely been quantified, especially
those acting before the 19th century. By analysing historical
fishery, market and tax statistics, independently confirmed by
archaeozoological records, we demonstrate that populations
declined by up to 90% during the transitional period between the
Early Middle Ages (c. 450–900 AD) and Early Modern Times (c.
1600 AD).
These dramatic declines coincided with improvements in watermill
technology and their geographical expansion across Europe. Our
extrapolations suggest that historical Atlantic salmon runs must
have once been very abundant indeed.
The historical perspective presented here contributes to a
better understanding of the primary factors that led to major
declines in salmon populations. Such understanding provides an
essential basis for the effective ecological rehabilitation of
freshwater ecosystems.

How Was Alexander Graham Bell Honored after His
Death?
After creating the first transmission of speech by electrical
wires in 1876, Scottish-born inventor Alexander Graham Bell
established the Bell Telephone system only a year later. And
only two years after that, Bell was able to step away from the
company’s board of directors to devote his life to further
invention and philanthropy. At age 32, he was rich and famous
and able to pursue other interests, including optical
telecommunications, hydrofoils, and aeronautics. When Bell died
in Nova Scotia in 1922, aged 75, his incredible achievements
were recognized across North America. All phone service in the
United States and Canada was shut down for one minute at the
exact time his funeral began.
A family familiar with deafness:
•Bell was named after his grandfather, Alexander Bell, but was
called “Aleck” by his family and friends during his childhood.
•Both his father and grandfather were speech therapists, and
both his mother and wife were deaf. As a young man, Alexander
helped his father promote a phonetic alphabet known as Visible
Speech.
•Despite her deafness, Bell's mother was a proficient pianist.
Her life and accomplishments taught Alexander Graham Bell how to
look beyond people’s disadvantages and find ways to help them.

Non-Electric Early Renewable Energy powered Car (Bennett
Buggy). ;D
Bennett buggy
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A Bennett buggy was a term used in Canada during the Great
Depression to describe a car which had its engine and windows
taken out and was pulled by a horse. In the United States, such
vehicles were known as Hoover carts, named after then-President
Herbert Hoover.[1][2]
The Canadian term was named after Richard Bennett, the Prime
Minister of Canada from 1930 to 1935, who was blamed for the
nation's poverty.
Cars being pulled by horses became a common sight during the
Depression. During the boom years of the 1920s, many Canadians
had bought cheap vehicles for the first time, but during the
depression, many found they did not have enough money to operate
them. This was especially true in the hard-hit Prairie
Provinces. The increased poverty played an important role, as
farmers could not buy gasoline. The price of gas also increased.
Gas taxes were also one of the best sources of revenue for the
provincial governments. When these provinces went into a
deficit, they increased these taxes, making gas even harder to
buy.
In Saskatchewan, badly hit by the depression, similar vehicles
with an additional seat over the front axle were dubbed
"Anderson carts" after Premier James T. M. Anderson.

Did Anne Frank’s Family Try to Leave Europe during WWII?
???
About a year before Anne Frank began writing in her diary in
June 1942, her father was fervently writing to family and
friends in the United States, asking for help. Otto Frank hoped
that someone could help his family escape from their perilous
plight in Nazi-occupied Holland. In 2007, the YIVO Institute for
Jewish Research in New York City released 65 documents -- typed
letters, handwritten notes, and a telegram -- detailing Otto
Frank's ultimately unsuccessful efforts to secure visas to the
United States, and later, to Cuba. By June 1940, the U.S.
Department of State had toughened its visa application process.
Candidates had to show "a good reason" for seeking admittance,
not just a desire to leave Europe.
A family desperate for somewhere to go:
•The State Department tightened regulations in order to reduce
the number of immigrant visas being granted. In the early 1940s,
there were national security concerns, a fear of foreigners,
and, some have argued, anti-Semitism.
•Although he was unable to get visas for his family to travel to
the United States, Otto Frank did receive a Cuban visa for
himself on 1 December 1941. Ten days later, Germany declared war
on the United States and the visa was canceled.
•The Frank family went into hiding in 1942. They were eventually
discovered and sent to concentration camps, where Anne Frank and
her sister, Margot, died of typhus and their mother, Edith, died
of starvation. [img

Agelbert NOTE: This belongs here because Professor Hudson
discusses the tremendously important economics tool called,
"Debt Relief". It is as old as the Old Testament (see: Jubilee
years) and has been the KEY to successful societies for
thousands of years. When Capitalism completely eliminated the
Debt Relief tool for all but the plutocratic elite, eventual
massive inequality and unavoidable collapse was locked in.
Simply put, societies are dysfunctional without periodic debt
relief to level the economics playing field across the board.
Enjoy and learn about key historical events discussed here. Wall
Street and business schools work overtime to make us think those
events "never happened" with an entire doublethink vocabulary of
economics sleight of hand terms. >:(

Thomas Jefferson was a wise, if flawed, man. He was
quite perceptive about the future of this nation.
He thought that his cherished federal union, the world’s
first democratic experiment, would be destroyed by slavery.
HTML https://www.monticello.org/site/plantation-and-slavery/thomas-jefferson-and-slavery
He didn't really understand the economics of Capitalism. Mr.
Jefferson did not realize that the model of economics that
extracts profit (i.e. excess value from a given activity) from
the labor of a human, be it under overt slavery or subsistence
wage type disguised slavery, inexorably leads to a massive
underclass that resents a privileged elite that never tires of
extracting as much as "the [s]rigged[/s] free market" will bear,
with a total disregard for human dignity.
Eventually the resulting empathy deficit disordered plutocracy
destroys a nation.
Jefferson was right about slavery eventually destroying this
country. He was wrong to think it would be limited (except as a
parasitic elite divide and conquer tactic ;)

Before Mr. Jefferson died, he wrote something that predicted the
sad future of our time rather well:
"The coincidence of a marked principle, moral and political,
with a geographical line, once conceived, I feared would never
more be obliterated from the mind; that it would be recurring on
every occasion and renewing irritations, until it would kindle
such mutual and mortal hatred, as to render separation
preferable to eternal discord. I have been among the most
sanguine in believing that our Union would be of long duration.
I now doubt it much, and see the event at no great distance, and
the direct consequence of this question; not by the line which
has been so confidently counted on -- the laws of nature control
this; but by the Potomac, Ohio and Missouri, or more probably,
the Mississippi upwards to our northern boundary. My only
comfort and confidence is, that I shall not live to see this;
and I envy not the present generation the glory of throwing away
the fruits of their fathers' sacrifices of life and fortune, and
of rendering desperate the experiment which was to decide
ultimately whether man is capable of self-government. This
treason against human hope will signalize their epoch in future
history as the counterpart of the medal of their predecessors."

What Was the Subject of the World’s First
Photographically-Illustrated Book?
HTML http://www.desismileys.com/smileys/desismileys_1402.gif<br
/>
English botanist Anna Atkins was the first person to publish a
book illustrated with photographic images, but she didn’t use a
camera. In 1843, building upon the recent discovery of cyanotype
photography, she produced detailed scientific images by placing
objects on light-sensitized paper and exposing them to sunlight.
Her main interest at the time was algae -- in particular,
seaweed -- and she made hundreds of cyanotype photograms that
were contact-printed for her self-published 1843 book
Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions.

Seeing nature in a different light:
•Some call Atkins the world’s first female photographer, but
others dispute that accolade because she didn’t actually use a
camera.
•Sir John Herschel invented the cyanotype photographic printing
process in 1842. Also known as "sun prints," the process
involves exposing a mixture of ammonium iron citrate and
potassium ferricyanide to ultraviolet light. The exposed paper
turns Prussian blue, similar to a blueprint.
