• With respect to Mayor Giuliani, I have had only minimal
contacts with him—a total of three that I recall. None related
to the events at issue. I do not know Mr. Giuliani’s motives for
attacking me. But individuals who have been named in the press
as contacts of Mr. Giuliani may well have believed that their
personal financial ambitions were stymied by our anti-corruption
policy in Ukraine.
• Finally, after being asked by the Department in early March to
extend my tour until 2020, I was then abruptly told in late
April to come back to Washington from Ukraine “on the next
plane.” You will understandably want to ask why my posting ended
so suddenly. I wanted to learn that too, and I tried to find
out. I met with the Deputy Secretary of State, who informed me
of the curtailment of my term. He said that the President had
lost confidence in me and no longer wished me to serve as his
ambassador. He added that there had been a concerted campaign
against me, and that the Department had been under pressure from
the President to remove me since the Summer of 2018. He also
said that I had done
nothing wrong and that this was not like other situations where
he had recalled ambassadors for cause. I departed Ukraine for
good this past May.
• Although I understand that I served at the pleasure of the
President, I was nevertheless incredulous that the U.S.
government chose to remove an Ambassador based, as best as I can
tell, on unfounded and false claims by people with clearly
questionable motives. To make matters worse, all of this
occurred during an especially challenging time in bilateral
relations with a newly elected Ukrainian president. This was
precisely the time when continuity in the Embassy in Ukraine was
most needed. ...
... Today, we see the State Department attacked and hollowed out
from within. State Department leadership, with Congress, needs
to take action now to defend this great institution, and its
thousands of loyal and effective employees. We need to rebuild
diplomacy as the first resort to advance America’s interests and
the front line of America’s defense. I fear that not doing so
will harm our nation’s interest, perhaps irreparably.

for president, yelling about Mexicans and Muslims and how we
need a Big, Beautiful Wall to keep Those People out. He knows
whose country this is. He knows who should make the rules, and
who ought to shut up and follow them. He knows who gets a seat
at the table in America. They were in from the jump, from the
moment they first stood at a rally and felt that twisted power
coursing through their veins.</p> <p>But others, you have to
think, were more gradual converts. Maybe they felt the world was
passing them by. Maybe they didn't know until he came along how
much they needed an outlet for their rage at a million quotidian
cuts—the new boss who doesn't look like a boss should
look, having to press "1" for English. They were primed for it,
sure, but it took a while to fully commit. Day after day, as
they continued to support him—through <a

place we did on Thursday night at a rally in Minneapolis,
Minnesota. Donald Trump, American president took the stage and,
among a great many other things, did this. The crowd laughed and

Conspiracy Universe. The stars of this show were Peter Strzok
and Lisa Page, two FBI employees involved in the Russia probe
who were having an affair and were opposed to the president's
candidacy for president. (There is <a

is the president channeling everything he learned from Vince
McMahon, pausing after he recites the names of the various heels
so the crowd can howl their derision. The details aren't
important. This is the show, where the enemies get bashed and We
cheer together. This is the president deliberately debasing his
office, going lower than ever before and bringing his supporters
with him, because he knows they have ventured into the deep and
dark together now and they can't see any path back. They will
follow him until he is stopped, and the farther they follow, the
more they are his. There is nothing that cannot be excused away
with half-baked crap about Fake News or What About Hillary.
Nihilism is at the heart of things now. There are no standards
or ethics to be observed, only enemies to lash out at from the
darkness.</p> <p>The rest of last night's national disgrace
was predictable by now. The president <a

ugliness came on a similarly predictable topic. Minneapolis is
home to Ilhan Omar and the sizable Somali community there from
which she hails, and it was always bound to feature in this
<em>Thursday Night Raw</em>-meets-Riefenstahl with a script
courtesy of Stephen Miller. First, he recited some evidence-free
conspiracy theories he got off a right-wing blog.</p> <div

president makes a lot of things clear here. The only real
"reporting" is whatever helps him and hurts his opponents. The
same goes for what constitutes Fake News: it's any negative
coverage of him. What is true—what's reflected in
observable reality—is not relevant. But he is also very
intent to cast the Minnesota congresswoman as The Other here.
Not only is she a black Muslim woman, she must be smeared as
someone who would violate basic codes of our society by marrying
her brother. (Again, this is all horse shit.) She cannot be One
of Us. She cannot be an American. She is The Other, and has no
right to a seat at the table or a say in how we run our society.
The crowd howled in response, including the kid, who couldn't
have been older than 15, standing behind Trump
on-camera.</p> <p>This is more than dirty politics, though.

If Pence and/or his wife were Christians, one or both might be
offended by Trump's in-their-face obscene vulgarity. But since
they love money, not God, it is perfectly logical, unsurprising,
and expected for them to go with the Trump toxic flow. It is
important, as the author Jack Holmes did here, to consistently
expose the morally bankrupt hypocrisy of Pence and all the other
pseudo-Christian Trump supporters. Anyone that cannot see that
morally bankrupt hypocrisy is willfully ignorant of the facts
about who, and what, Pence and the pseudo-Chrisitian
"evangelicals" are all about.

At their first meeting since the impeachment inquiry began,
President Trump called House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) a
"third-rate politician," Senate Minority Leader Charles E.
Schumer (D-N.Y.) said Wednesday. Trump had also lashed out at
Pelosi earlier Wednesday, saying she has "done this country a
tremendous disservice."
The president's comments came as Trump's Republican allies
escalated their attacks on the proceedings -- accusing Democrats
of "Soviet-style tactics" -- as another witness testified behind
closed doors on Capitol Hill.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), meanwhile, told
Republican senators that the Senate will probably meet six days
a week during the impeachment trial, which he expects to begin
around Thanksgiving. 👀
House investigators are hearing from Michael McKinley, the
former senior adviser to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, behind
closed doors. McKinley resigned last week amid worsening morale
at the State Department and widespread concern that Pompeo has
done little to defend diplomats who became ensnared in efforts
by Trump to get Ukraine to investigate former vice president Joe
Biden and his son Hunter.
