Most Ashkenazi Jews, traditionally believed to have descended
from the ancient tribes of Israel, may in fact be maternally
descended from prehistoric Europeans.

The majority of Ashkenazi Jews are descended from prehistoric
European women, according to study published today (October 8 )
in Nature Communications. While the Jewish religion began in the
Near East, and the Ashkenazi Jews were believed to have origins
in the early indigenous tribes of this region, new evidence from
mitochondrial DNA, which is passed on exclusively from mother to
child, suggests that female ancestors of most modern Ashkenazi
Jews converted to Judaism in the north Mediterranean around
2,000 years ago and later in west and central Europe.
The Ashkenazi Jews make up the majority of Jews today and most
recently have ancestry in central or Eastern Europe. Previous
work has demonstrated that just four mitochondrial types, pass
down from four mothers, account for 40 percent of variation in
Ashkenazi Jews’ mitochondrial DNA, and some researchers have
published evidence of Near Eastern origins for these Ashkenazi
mitochondrial types.

Last week, AlterNet sat down with Blumenthal for a conversation
about his book. We spoke about the current state of Israeli
society, his method of reporting and what readers will learn
about Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as negotiations with
Iran and the Palestinians continue.
Alex Kane: The headlines are largely dominated by other
political problems in the Middle East: Egypt, Syria. So what’s
the importance of a book on Israel at this moment?
Max Blumenthal: I wrote this book because I wanted to show
Americans what they’re paying for. Every American's relationship
to Israel can be summed up as money for nothing and checkpoints
for free. We’re giving them $30 billion over the next 10 years
to guarantee their qualitative military edge over all other
countries. We also have to see Israel’s role in destabilizing
the Middle East and in seeking to ensure that U.S. policy
guarantees that Israel’s Arab neighbors are weakened and that
the people of the Arab world can’t determine their own future.
That’s why Israel had such a comfortable relationship with Hosni
Mubarak—because he was a Western and Gulf puppet who was helping
to participate in the siege of Gaza and why Israel is so excited
about the coup that ousted Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood. The
Brotherhood might have ceded to US demands to police the Sinai,
but now with Sisi, the crackdown on Gaza is much more extreme.
They have filled up possibly 80 percent of the tunnels that
bring vital food and medicine and even fish into the Gaza Strip,
which is shocking considering that the Gaza Strip is a coastal
territory -- they must import fish through tunnels because
they’re not allowed to fish. And now we're seeing Egyptian naval
forces join the Israeli navy in arresting Gazan fishermen.
Now the coup regime in Egypt has committed a series of massacres
which were inevitable as soon as they took power on July 3. They
massacred non-violent Muslim Brotherhood demonstrators,
especially in the Rabba area of Cairo--they killed over 1,000
people. And the U.S. has been threatening to withdraw some
military aid to Egypt--of course, they’re not going to fully
hold this regime accountable for the massive human rights crimes
it's committing. And Israel all the while has been demanding
veto power over the United States’ efforts to hold Egypt
accountable. The Israeli government is enthralled with Sisi's
coup regime and the Egyptian military, and it will do all it can
to see the US fund it and prevent it from being held
accountable. So to see Israel as this normal, European country
that exists completely independently of the chaos in the Middle
East is completely bogus.
And the other reason is much more simple: that we are paying for
the only open ethnocracy in the world, and its entire existence
and its domination and control over the lives of millions of
Palestinians and the exclusion of millions more Palestinians
simply because they’re not Jews. The whole fate of all these
people who are living between the river and the sea, mired in
misery and refugee camps, is in the hands of the American people
and Washington.

On Sunday in Bethlehem, Pope Francis called for recognition of
an independent Palestinian state. CNN reports that he asked
for “the acknowledgment by all of the right of two states to
exist and to live in peace and security within internationally
recognized borders.”

Note: I added the bold caps emphasis on the barrel of oil price,
money spent in one year and the need to import oil from the
Middle East.
This totally unjustified profit, never mind the needless lose of
lives, then increases the power of the fossil fuel corporations
to perpetuate a biosphere harming dirty fuel status quo. How? By
"funding" politicians with rather large "donations" to keep
renewable energy from competing with dirty energy.
If all this was just about power politics, I might not be that
concerned. Humans, particularly the overly ambitious and
aggressive ones, have always fought and schemed to control and
fleece the population at large.
But now we know the future of our biosphere is at stake. Now we
know the entire edifice of dirty energy is a knife in the back
of the biosphere that will destroy our species and many others.
The system, as defined by the fossil fuel fascist dystopia that
currently runs most of the human affairs among the 1 billion
population in the developed world that is saddling the other 6
billion, who are totally free of guilt for causing it, with this
climate horror we are beginning to experience, IS quite stubborn
and does not wish to change the status quo.
Mother nature will force it to do so.
Whether it is done within the next two decades or not (i.e. a
switch to 100% PLUS bioremediation Renewable Energy steady state
economy) will dictate the size of the consequent die off, not
only of humans but thousands of other species as well.
We are now in a climate cake that has been baked for about 1,000
years according to atmospheric, objective, proven with
experimental data, science.
If the crash program to switch to renewable energy is to begin
soon, I expect the trigger for the crash program will be the
first ice free arctic summer (according to my estimates) in
2017. But millions of people demanding a transition to 100%
renewable Energy will give us a fighting chance to win the
Climate Victory.

In the weeks since Israel launched Operation Protective Edge,
nearly 1,000 Palestinian civilians have been killed in
unspeakable violence visited upon Gaza by Israeli missiles,
while in Israel three civilians have been killed by Hamas
rockets which have steadily fallen, fortunately harming few.*
Every death has been tragic, each loss amplified by the fact
that this violence, this 'war,' did not have to be. Every
innocent life, taken by the hands of leaders on both sides who
have acted criminally, calls out to us for this conflict to end.
Twelve years ago today, my wife almost became another civilian
tragedy in this ongoing conflict when a Hamas attack nearly took
her life. The two friends of ours with whom she was sitting in a
university cafeteria on July 31, 2002, when a remotely-detonated
bomb went off, were not as fortunate.
Today, as happens every time this day rolls around, I mourn
those friends we lost, just as I mourn the pain my wife endured
in her recovery. But today, twelve years later, feels different
than the previous eleven. As I watch scenes of innocent people
being injured and killed in hospitals, schools, open-air markets
and in their own living rooms, I shudder.
I shudder not just because it is human to do so, but because I
am acutely feeling on this day the absolute horror and
senselessness of the human tragedy which occurred twelve years
ago, and which is taking place repeatedly, by the hour, in Gaza
today.
Israel, the country in which we lived and the country which I
want to see thrive, has been striking civilian targets in Gaza,
a dense, urban strip of land, with much force. It has been doing
so knowing that innocent men, women and children are being
killed, knowing that there is nowhere for residents to flee,
that over 70 percent of those lost in the rubble of downed
apartment buildings and schools are innocent.
And yet it has continued to expand its military operations in a
war history has shown will in no way achieve its stated goals of
achieving quiet and peace.
On the other side, Hamas has been much less successful at
killing innocent Israelis, though it hasn't been from a lack of
trying, as crude rockets have indiscriminately been fired into
Israel daily. Many intercepted by the Iron Dome. Others falling
into desolate areas. All of them hoping to strike innocent
civilians.
I've written previously about my opposition to this Gaza
operation as both a Jew and a progressive American, about the
importance of speaking out and showing empathy for victims on
both sides, Palestinians and Israelis.
I'm not going to rehash political arguments and chronicle events
to demonstrate why both sides are to blame for where we are
today. This isn't the space.
All I simply want to say, as one who has been affected by
violence visited upon civilians, is this: as I mourn today for
what has occurred, I am also mourning for what is occurring, and
for what I fear will continue to occur.
Unless someone steps in and demands that this end. Now.
