> Hi folks, we finally took the jump and bought a new car - the
2016 Toyota Avalon Hybrid Limited. We made this purchase the
weekend before Christmas. First, I'd like to thank everyone
(especially AG) that provided input for me on new cars. AG, I
hope you're not too disappointed that we didn't choose an
EV...but at least this car gets pretty good fossil fuel mileage
- 40/39 mpg. Due to the satisfaction we've had with our Prius
over the years, we decided to limit our options strictly to
Toyota vehicles. And we wanted a sedan. Due to my spine
condition, a major factor in our decision was comfort. As noted
in this article
HTML http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/cars/revised-2016-toyota-avalon-smooths-the-ride,<br
/>the suspension of the 2016 model has been retuned to deliver a
softer, more comfort-oriented ride. So in a nutshell, we
purchased the most comfortable Toyota sedan that delivered an
acceptable mileage per gallon (for us). BTW, we paid cash - so
the banks will not be making any money on financing. For some
reason, zero percent financing was not available for Hybrids.
Here's a couple of pics that show the color (Crimson Mica) of
the car we bought:

Now if you could just make sure the fuel part is E85 (Only
Brazil has E100, unfortunately) you would be able to give the
finger to the fossil fuel worshippers on a daily basis.

If you are interested, I can provide you with all the
information you need to convert your fuel use to E85. Conversion
kits are available for ALL internal combustion (gasoline
powered, not diesel) cars.

SNIPPETS from Myths and FAQs:
Is my car Flex Fuel from the factory?
The first thing to do is check for badging. If there is a Flex
Fuel emblem on the back of the car then it is. If there is no
emblem, check your fuel filler cap. If it is yellow, then yes it
is flex. Also check the inside of the filler door. Some
manufacturers will put an E85 sticker on the inside. The final
place to check is the Fuel Freedom Foundation's website
HTML http://www.fuelfreedom.org/our-work/fuels-101/check-car/.
They
maintain the most comprehensive database of vehicles that are
already Flex Fuel from the factory. If you get a positive hit,
congratulations and head to the nearest E85 station and enjoy.
If you get the big X, please come back to our site and buy a
conversion kit.
Does your kit have any certifications?
Back in 2008 we did testing with the US EPA. Our kit was awarded
an OBD2 Compliance. In order to enter the European market, our
kit needed to be CE TUV certified. The CE TUV certification is
better than being UL listed and Good Housekeeping seal of
approval combined. We used to have a kit which was called
FlexFuelUS. It was US EPA certified on a small number of engine
groups. It was discontinued it as it was very expensive,
difficult to install, and the only benefit over our standard kit
was you could get some rebates but only if the vehicle was part
of a fleet.
Does your conversion kit lock my vehicle into E85 only?
Our conversion kit will allow you to use Gasoline, E85, or any
combination of the two fuels.
Can I run E100 with your conversion kit?
Yes. We have many people using E98 and E100 in their converted
vehicles. Every car is different so you will need to play mad
scientist and experiment with the water content. Too much water
displaces the oxygen in the cylinder resulting in an
antidentonant. Not enough water then results in wasting fuel.
Do I need to change my fuel pump? Fuel Lines? Fuel Tank? Fuel
Rail? Fuel Injectors?
No. If you have electronic fuel injection, your fuel system is
ethanol ready. Please remember that the only difference between
a FlexFuel vehicle and a non FlexFuel vehicle is software. ;D
Can I safely convert my vehicle?
Yes you can. We have sold over 100,000 kits around the world. We
have done testing with the US EPA. Our kit is CE certified in
Europe. If our systems were not safe, the US EPA would have shut
us down a long time ago. Also if E85 was truly harmful to your
vehicle, then the EPA would mandate that the E85 pump nozzle be
a different size than unleaded – just like they mandated with
diesel. Did you know the EPA has a SWAT team?
Can I run Methanol with your kit?
Yes. M85 is used in Europe and we have done some testing here in
Colorado with Methanol. Since methanol is so clean when burning,
it is important to have fresh O2 sensors and a very well tuned
up car. Methanol does eat seals in your fuel pump. Vyton is a
synthetic rubber sealing material used in many vehicle fuel
pumps. Vyton works just fine with gasoline and ethanol but will
be damaged by methanol resulting in fuel pump failure. Buna-N
seals are gasoline, methanol and ethanol proof. Vyton seals can
be found on many GM cars and Buna-N can be found on many
European vehicles. Which ones specifically have which, we don’t
know.
Can your kit allow my car to run Diesel or Bio Diesel?
No. Diesel engines have different ignition and fuel delivery. If
you want to convert your gasoline engine to Diesel, it will
require an engine swap.
My car requires premium fuel. Can I still convert my car and use
E85?
Yes. The typical car that has a premium fuel requirement needs a
minimum of 91 octane. E85 has 105 octane which is even better!

- Wire harness
- Appropriate connectors for your vehicle
- Five year warranty
- Seven day a week toll-free technical support

Solar shipping container charges & stores electric cargo bikes
for zero emissions deliveries
HTML http://us.123rf.com/400wm/400/400/yayayoy/yayayoy1106/yayayoy110600019/9735563-smiling-sun-showing-thumb-up.jpg<br
/>[/move]
Combining solar power, battery storage, electric vehicles, and
shipping containers, this local transportation and delivery
solution pushes all of the right cleantech buttons.
When it comes to cleaning up transportation, deliveries and
service calls and other local mobility needs are one place that
seems to keep being overlooked. And perhaps that's just because
we tend to be car-centric or ownership-minded about vehicles, so
when we see a sassy new Tesla, we go a little ga-ga, but when we
see an electric delivery vehicle, especially one so unassuming
as a cargo motorcycle, we might not even recognize it for what
it is, which is a local transport solution that is quiet, clean,
and efficient.
And maybe part of that is because many of us don't own or ride
motorcycles, so the idea of using electric ones probably doesn't
even register with us as a potentially greener way to transport
people and stuff. But in many places, local deliveries and
service calls could be carried out via this emissions-free
option, and a company called Current Motor is on the leading
edge with its "Mini-fleet" of EVs in a box.
In this case, the EVs are electric cargo motorcycles with a 450
lb (204 kg) capacity and a 50 mile (80.4 km) range, and the box
they come in is a modified shipping container that serves as
their storage facility and solar-powered charging station.
Essentially, the Current Motor solution is a virtually instant,
drop-in option that could be a turnkey local delivery solution,
and while it's still a new-ish and (relatively) untested
prototype, it's been chosen to be included as one of four
featured demonstrations at the upcoming ARPA-E Seventh Annual
Energy Innovation Summit in March.
The Mini-fleet in a Box is centered around a standard ISO
shipping container (20' x 8' x 8') that has been modified with a
solar panel array (which folds out for charging and in for
storage) and a 22 kWh battery storage system that is said to be
able to be fully charged in a day. The Nb Solar Charging Station
is claimed to be able to fully charge four of the company's Nb
Electric Cargo Motorcycles from the battery bank in about five
hours, which means that the entire system could be entirely
self-powered. The motorcycles, which come with the company's
"Telematics" platform for tracking and reporting, fit inside the
container for storage and charging, and the container also
includes a radio communications center and mobile office
options.

HTML http://www.chscommunicator.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/current-motor-scooter-04.jpg
Current Motor
Along with the clean power from solar panels, and the energy
storage feature for managing electricity production during the
day and charging the bikes at night, the Current Motor
Mini-Fleet solution has another major advantage to it, which is
its standard physical footprint of an ISO shipping container.
These containers can be easily transported by truck, train,
boat, or even a heavy-lifting helicopter, using the existing
shipping container infrastructure, and could be not only a
potentially turnkey business solution, but also an effective
option for deployment during emergencies or natural disaster
responses. Additionally, the system's solar array and battery
storage unit can function as a micro-grid for mobile power, and
the whole package is said to be able to be installed "by one
person in minutes" and will not require any permits or
additional engineering work to get up and running.
Video at link below:
The ARPA-E description calls this is a full-scale prototype, not
a finished product, so it may be awhile before we're seeing the
Mini-Fleet in a Box solution in place in a city near you, but
the Michigan-based company said last year that orders "are being
manufactured now" for export "to global mining and manufacturing
companies."
“Current Motor’s Mini-fleet-in-a-Box uses 100% renewable, clean,
solar generated electricity to charge our zero emissions
Electric Cargo Motorcycles, making them among the most
sustainable fleet options available. Current Motor green
Mini-fleets are turnkey and self-contained, and literally work
out of the box upon delivery to customer sites." - Lauren
Flanagan, Executive Chair of Current Motor
--- Quote ---
> One of the potential applications of the Current Motor
solution could be, as seen in one of the company's Facebook
posts, for local services such as police patrols, and with its
450 lb cargo capacity, the bikes may be able to
replace a fair number of other local delivery and service
vehicles

system.

Of course as committed bicycle urbanists we have to point out
that a tricycle or bicycle could go farther, faster, would cost
a lot less money and would provide a lot more exercise. And, you
wouldn't need a two-tesla garage. But I have been saying this
for years about the full size model too, and nobody listens then
either. ;D

/>Charles and David Koch are reportedly backing a new group that
will use millions to promote petroleum and fight against
government subsidies for electric vehicles.
In an effort to strike back at record-breaking EV sales, the
fossil fuel industry is allegedly funding a new organization
that will spend $10 million a year to push petroleum-based
transportation fuels and attack government subsidies on EVs,
refining industry sources told the Huffington Post.

Worth noting that all gasoline cars are heavily subsidized via
oil company tax credits & unpaid public health costs.

Fossil fuels is scared sh--less.
Agelbert reply:
Yep.
Amory Lovins knows the score. The fossil fuel industry is a
wounded beast. It's days are numbered.
QUOTE
Over the past 40 years, Americans have saved 31 times as much
energy as renewables added. Those cumulative savings are
equivalent to 21 years’ current energy use. They’re simply
invisible: you can’t see the energy you don’t use. But globally,
it’s a bigger “supply” than oil, and inexorably, it’s going to
get much, much bigger.
Oil companies worry about climate regulation, but they’re even
more at risk from market competition. The oil that’ll be
unburnable for climate reasons is probably less than the oil
that’ll be unsellable because efficiency and renewables can do
the same job cheaper.
An oil business that sputters when oil’s at $90 a barrel, swoons
at $50, and dies at $30 will not do well against the $25 cost of
getting U.S. mobility—or anyone else’s, since the technologies
are fungible—completely off oil by 2050. That cost, like the $18
per saved barrel to make U.S. automobiles uncompromised,
attractive, cost-effective, and oil-free, is a 2010–11 analytic
result; today’s costs are even lower and continue to fall.
In short, like whale oil in the 1850s, oil is becoming
uncompetitive even at low prices before it became
unavailable even at high prices.
