Here’s the only explainer on California drought you need
By Abrahm Lustgarten, Lauren Kirchner, and Amanda Zamora on 27
Jun 2015
SNIPPET:
Why do I keep hearing about the California drought, if it’s the
Colorado River that we’re “killing”? ???
Pretty much every state west of the Rockies has been facing a
water shortage of one kind or another in recent years.
California’s is a severe, but relatively short-term, drought.
But the Colorado River basin — which provides critical water
supplies for seven states including California — is the victim
of a slower-burning catastrophe entering its 16th year. Wyoming,
Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Nevada, Arizona, and California all
share water from the Colorado River, a hugely important water
resource that sustains 40 million people in those states,
supports 15 percent of the nation’s food supply, and fills two
of largest water reserves in the country.

VW worker killed by robot in Germany
David Jolley
Automotive News Europe
July 2, 2015 11:39 CET
FRANKFURT -- Volkswagen Group said a contractor was crushed to
death by a robot at its German components factory in Kassel,
north of Frankfurt.
The 21-year-old worker was part of a two-man team setting up the
robot on Monday when it grabbed him and crushed him against a
metal plate, a company spokesman told Automotive News Europe.
The team was assembling the robot for a new electric motor
production line. The man was resuscitated at the scene but died
later at a hospital in Kassel, the spokesman said.
Some media reported that initial investigations indicated that
human error was to blame, but the spokesman declined to comment
on this, saying only that an investigation had begun into the
accident.
The robot normally operates within a confined area at the plant,
picking up parts and moving them around. It can carry out
various tasks in the assembly process, the spokesman said.
The contractor had been standing within the production area with
the robot when the accident happened, while his colleague was
standing in the outer area, local newspaper Hessische
Niedersaechsische Allgemeine reported.
German prosecutors are now considering whether to bring charges
following the accident, German news agency DPA said.
According to VW’s website, the Kassel site is the automaker’s
main transmission plant and supplies the VW group with about 4
million manual and automatic transmissions a year, in addition
to producing body, platform and exhaust parts. It also
reconditions old engines and transmissions.

"Together, we must save the planet (and DRILL, BABY, DRILL.)" -
President Obama cartoon animation.
Obama:
Hello, everybody. Greetings from the beauty and majesty, that
is Alaska . . .
. . . where under the direction of noted survivalist Bear
Grylls, I will be wrestling with my environmental self.
A time of retreating sea ice, permafrost melting, climate
change— is a time to open up the Arctic to oil drilling!
More powerful storms and more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere
mean— we must turn over sensitive habitat to Royal Dutch Shell.
We must come together to honor our obligation to the planet— and
to oil leases signed under George W. Bush.
For we are the ones we’ve been waiting for— and by “we” I mean,
a foreign oil company who will get the oil out of our ground!
We need not sacrifice what makes America great for short term
gain— but, a seventy-five percent chance of an oil spill . . .
is a chance I can live with.
So remember, when you see me on a melting glacier, an eroding
beach, by a native— you can also see me approving Arctic
drilling, okaying pipelines, and giving the nod to fracking.
For together, we must save the planet . . . and drill, baby
drill.

This reinforces my opinion that the clathrates are being melted
by heat from below, not atmospheric heat. Atmospheric
temperature hasn't changed THAT much to get clathrates buried
under permafrost to start melting.
RE

There is something else you should consider. That is, the
ability of the oceans to serve as a carbon sink (the one that
masked the CO2 hit and has a time lag of about 40 years) is
reduced as the oceans warm (colder salt water can absorb more
CO2). Therefore, increased ocean temperatures goose still
another positive feedback mechanism that will pump CO2 out of
the ocean and into the atmosphere in addition to the unabated
increase in the amount CO2 being pumped into it from burning
fossil fuels.

RE said,
The key here is whether geotectonic or anthropogenic, this
process is underway, and we need to find a way to survive on a
planet with 22C Average global temperature, which is where the
system plateaus when all the carbon is released into the
atmosphere.
Good luck trying to do that. Already I have read from a
credentialed scientist that a global society cannot exist in a
plus 4 degree C World (19C average).
A plus 10 degree C world (25 C average) is Permian Extinction
level stuff. And the claim we are headed there BEFORE the
positive feedback loops are burned out is not hyperbole.
I don't think we have a snowball's chance in hell of handling a
22 degree C average temperature (about 6 degrees C higher than
present). Yes, for a while you can survive at the poles with a
60 METER sea level rise, but biosphere math requires diversity
(that won't be there) plus the ability of a large enough gene
pool (mating pairs) of surviving species to remain within their
sine qua non homeostatic band. We don't know how to do that.
Unless you are planning some giant mirror in space technofix
(which might not work for other reasons), any plan to survive
above a plus 3 degree C rise is not possible with our present
level of technology.
Of course the extremophiles can handle just about anything.
Tardigrades might inherit the earth. That isn't much help to us.
