Religious discussions?

Personally I stand as firm as ever in my conviction that it is
an arrogant presumption for mortal man to generally attempt to
tell his 'fellows' what he considers God to have said to them,
and to have meant by it.
When God 'speaks' to me I believe it generally to be to tell me
what he wants me to hear for my own guidance and benefit.
Only rarely will it be for me to pass on to others (like I am
doing right here and now ;) :D ;D ??? ::) )
Never will I see myself as a self appointed prophet, teacher,
interpreter, etc.
That's for others to assume with all the heavy attendant
responsibility that they so often too lightly embrace.

Amen to that..totally agree. There have been times when a person
is 'down' and in lost contact with God. At times like that God
may speak to someone to give a message to the other person and
say " I believe God told me to share this with you". I have
seen that happen much.
To cover myself I don't ever say " God said " we are yet
mortal..I do pass on what I felt God say..and always leave them
free to do with it what they will.
I think part of the gifting of the Church for the building up of
the body is - 'he speaketh unto men to edification, and
exhortation, and comfort.'
Now, as you say, when it comes down to doctrine or "what the
bible says or doesn't say etc..I am right with you.

If God has called a person to share with others
what God has given that person, it certainly would not be
presumption on his part to do so, would it?
Of course, too often I believe, people may be presuming they are
hearing God's voice when it really is not His voice at all. We
must regularly and continuously, I believe, be checking in with
God. Because He spoke to us previously, does not mean He is
doing it again, does it?

Let's not forget that God gave the church prophets. And that
Paul encourages us to "lust after" (earnestly desire) the
Spiritual gifts, "especially that you may prophesy".
Like Helen, I never use "God says ...", but always something
like "I think God maybe saying ...."
I heard a statistic recently that the "top" recognised prophets
in the world today (I know that raises loads of questions)
reckon on being right maximum 80% of the time. So one really
must not assume we definitely have God's word for a situation.
I think if we stay within the guidelines in 1 cor 14: "But the
one who prophesies speaks to people for their strengthening,
encouraging and comfort." And don't stray into predicting the
future or telling people what jobs to get etc we wont get into
(much) trouble.
Regards,
Mike HM
