Hi Nancy,
I greatly appreciate the trouble you took to type out and post
that old stuff by me about the Word of God.....and a perfect
copy as far as I can see.
That said I am completely lost as to what is being said between
you, Patrick, and Kerry. (and me too for that matter).
But you know me....anything is better than silence.

I didn't really understand what his email was about Mike...but I
"think" it sounded positive and hopeful? Yes?

Thas rubbish.
My avatar is a dig at JW's who go in pairs from door to door
saying something like "we want to talk to you about Jesus" (or
'cheeses' in the case of JW mice).

I thought it was hopeful until they quickly followed up with
another Email saying that I had to first sort out the problem of
why the site was 'down' with Heart Internet before they could do
anything.
Which completely negates the reason for transferring away from
HI.
So I've told Just Hosts that if that's the case then I want my
money back.....and I guess that will be the end of FSF (and of
me the way I'm now feeling).

Question: Did you ever pay to advertise the site? Is that
the reason there were so many guests at the site? Were some of
them trying to register so they could spam?
I'm also wondering if the people you paid to the advertising
didn't sell the name of the site to spammers. That would bring
lots more traffic to the site, but not the type you wanted. I
think some spambots can clog a site by continuing to try to
register so they post their spam.

Nope, never made any attempt to promote the site.
All I did, after getting fed up with constantly having to reject
so many spam registrations, was to allow them after altering
their registration email addresses and then giving them new
passwords without them knowing.
I'm guessing that several of the searchbots make money out of
selling registration opportunities to spammers and took umbridge
at my corrupting of the resultant registrations, or that the
registrants of the corrupted accounts spent so much time failing
to log into their accounts that they clogged up the site.

Mike,
I would guess, really, that the spammers would have stopped by
now, at least temporarily. Once they spot the site is down,
they're probably programmed to stop trying, or perhaps to try
less frequently. Of course, if the site went up again, they
might spot that and then increase their efforts.
I take it you can still access the site yourself. If you can, I
suggest you go through all the fake accounts and ban their IPs.
Who knows how many bogus IPs they may be operating with; but
if you nail each new one as it comes in, that should deal with
it.
Do you make people go through the "visual verification image"
when registering to filter out computer programs? If you do
have that in place, perhaps increasing the level of difficulty
would help.

Unfortunately I too am unable to access the site.
After I had played the game of scrambling the spam registrations
I added an extra registration question "what are the first four
words of John 3:16" and that put a stop to them.
Indeed if only I could access the site I would delete the 40
scrambled spam registrations.
On Monday my techno is coming and hopefully he can see if it is
possible to access the site via FTP which, as yet, I cannot
understand.
