James 5:12
KJV12 But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by
heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath: but let
your yea be yea; and your nay, nay; lest ye fall into
condemnation.
WEB 12 But above all things, my brothers, don’t swear, neither
by heaven, nor by the earth, nor by any other oath; but let your
“yes” be “yes,” and your “no,” “no”; so that you don’t fall into
hypocrisy.[2]
These are my thoughts, please share yours.
James is quoting Jesus almost word for word. Jesus said this on
the sermon of the mount. To many times we make commitments or
promises that we have no business making and that we cant keep,
this is saying that we shouldn’t do that. Yes we should do what
we say we do but we shouldn’t make promises about it. This
culture was big on making oaths to God, they made big oaths out
of pride but there were times they were broken, this dishonored
God and the church and it is best just to avoid oaths so that
they aren’t broken.
