2 Samuel 1:17-18 King James Version (KJV)
17 And David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and over
Jonathan his son:
18 (Also he bade them teach the children of Judah the use of the
bow: behold, it is written in the book of Jasher.)

17 Then David went into mourning over Saul and his son JoNathan.
18 And to teach the sons of Judah, he sang this song:
'It's written in the scroll of the righteous:
These are my thoughts, please share yours.
17 Mourning was a period of time where they did not do much of
anything, they often times did not even eat during times of
mourning the time frame of how long the mourning lasted was
dependent on how close they were to those that passed. David
mourning for Saul showed who David was because Saul hated David
but David cared for Saul and of course we know David cared for
Jonathan they were close friends.
18 David knew how to write and play music so he wrote this song
for the remembrance of Saul and Jonathan. The Book of Jasher was
man’s account of Jewish early history from times around Moses to
the start of David’s reign but God’s account for us is not in
the book of Jasher but in the bible itself. History was often
times recorded down but while the bible is accurate history it
is not the purpose for God giving it to us.
