       2 Samuel 1:11-13 King James Version (KJV)
       11 Then David took hold on his clothes, and rent them; and
       likewise all the men that were with him:
       12 And they mourned, and wept, and fasted until even, for Saul,
       and for Jonathan his son, and for the people of the LORD, and
       for the house of Israel; because they were fallen by the sword.
       13 And David said unto the young man that told him, Whence art
       thou? And he answered, I am the son of a stranger, an Amalekite.

       11 Then David took hold of his clothes and tore them, and so did
       all the men who were with him. 12 They cried in sorrow and did
       not eat until evening, because of Saul and his son Jonathan, and
       of the people of the Lord and of the family of Israel. For they
       had fallen by the sword. 13 David said to the young man, “Where
       are you from?” And he answered, “I am the son of one from
       another land, an Amalekite.”

       These are my thoughts, please share yours.
       11 This is a sign of mourning and grief. It was also common to
       put dust or ashes on your head as well during mourning.
       12 They mourned for both Saul and Jonathan. Jonathan was David’s
       friend but Saul hated David but that did not matter now. David
       being a Godly man mourned for both. Was not gad the one who
       wanted him dead had died, this is how many of us would act
       instead David shows compassion.
       13 Now after the time of mourning David addresses the man again,
       wanting handle the matter of him stating that he killed Saul.
