And even though most muslims arent violent, neither do they
protest much over the vieolence of those who are.

And, honestly, the idea of an EMP does worry me. What easier
way to completely set America in panic mode? Ever think about
it? No power! No deliveries to stores, etc. Wow. The
implications are endless. Terrible.
"Panic" is putting it mildly. Various estimates --
and not by a crackpot person -- said 90% of the population could
die within a year after such an attack. From the Wall Street
Journal
HTML http://www.wsj.com/articles/james-woolsey-and-peter-vincent-pry-the-growing-threat-from-an-emp-attack-1407885281:
What would a successful EMP attack look like? The EMP
Commission, in 2008, estimated that within 12 months of a
nationwide blackout, up to 90% of the U.S. population could
possibly perish from starvation, disease and societal breakdown.
In 2009 the congressional Commission on the Strategic Posture of
the United States, whose co-chairmen were former Secretaries of
Defense William Perry and James Schlesinger, concurred with the
findings of the EMP Commission and urged immediate action to
protect the electric grid. Studies by the National Academy of
Sciences, the Department of Energy, the Federal Energy
Regulatory Commission and the National Intelligence Council
reached similar conclusions.
But the panic would certainly make things worse. Think about
it. Lots of people seem in a panic over a shooting by these
two Muslims that killed "only" 14 people. Even the World
Trade Tower attack killed only a few thousand people, and that
was enough to panic the nation. What if people were dying all
over the place?
Yet our government appears to be doing very little about it.
They wait until something happens before doing much about it.

^ Yes, I know the statistics. I have
actually looked into this more than I care to admit. :-\
ATM's would not work and most people now carry no cash, so they
would, even in the first hours, be unable to buy any supplies.
The first hours would be best to use cash and buy what you could
( though many stores would close, waiting for the power that
would not come back on.) Most people, initially, would not
understand what was happening, so you have a small window of
opportunity before real fear sets in. Even if you could
eventually grow food, you would need to protect it from roving
bands. It would be wise to set up small communities that work
together for survival. Unless you could survive alone in a VERY
remote area.
Most people would die, yes, especially those dependent on
medicines no longer shipped. The elderly, handicapped, sick . .
. all very vulnerable. If it were winter, just heating homes
would be a challenge. Preserving perishable food-- another
challenge. Fresh, clean water might even be a challenge.
Sanitation in cities? It would be horrible to be stuck in large
cities. Deadly. People would make mass exodus into the
country.
Simple infected injuries, without antibiotics, could become
deadly. Pharmacies would be looted. Everything would be
looted.
Almost no cars would run and transportation would come to a
sudden, drastic stop.
News would be difficult to obtain.
No 911 or emergency help.
Families separated; previous "short distances" would suddenly be
several days journey.
It would be good to have a bicycle with a trailer. Good to have
a weapon. Good to have books on homesteading and the "old
ways."
Good to have God.

Whoever has backup generators (like hospitals and many private
ppl) would have electricity for probably a month or so, and
meanwhile electric companies do have backup transformers, not
enough for everyone blown, but many could be replaced to give
some safe zones, probably near power generating plants, and more
could be made (transformers) to eventually replace more and
more. Its just that a lot of looting would occur, probably
walmarts and the like would be overwhelmed shortly by people and
emptied of foods, generators, candles, all things for
emergencies, of course mostly not paying. Saving seed will
probably be important from your non hybrid plants. Having a
way to store foods longer, like in root cellers will be good.
As you pointed out, a gun would be good, but guns would only be
so good against ppl who had more guns and better shots and more
willing to use them. Wildlife would be severly cut back due to
massive hunting, and as you said, those in the cities would be
really bad off.

Yes, we've discussed getting a generator, and
not just for a possible EMP, but because we lose power here
fairly often. But then, a generator is only good for as long as
you have fuel to run it. And, how would we store the fuel?
This farm had a fuel storage drum, but the farmer came and took
it-- after the sale, after we had moved in, which really
irritated me. For now, we only have several gas cans. I'm not
sure how much gas a generator goes thru. Probably depends on
the size.
Do you know if they're terribly expensive, Brad?

You can get a good one for about $500, we sell them at walmart.
But I bought mine from the company who put in our well. I
went to ask them what kind of generator would we need to operate
the pump that pulls up the water about 300 feet or more from
underground. They sold me an older one they had for around
$400, but it was better than the ones we sell at walmart. Also
they sell these $20 lifetime water filters/bags, you can put in
most waters, even in suspect waters and it will filter out the
bacteria. That will be worth its weight in gold easily once
water stops pumping out. They are in the sporting goods
section in the camping area.

I want to know what our government is doing about drones. They
surely can be used to do a lot more than take pictures or make
deliveries for Amazon. Some could be used to scatter diseases
-- like anthrax spores. Or dump poisons into water supplies.
Some could be used as suicide bombers to take out important
parts of infrastructure. And all our government seems capable
of coming up with is saying they want owners to register them?
Good grief, what good would that do when some drones can fly
half way around the world? And what good would it do when we
know terrorists or foreign governments aren't going to register
them?
I think all drones operating in the US should not only be
registered, they should have transponders that ID them so if
the government spots one, they can tell at once who the owner
is. If it doesn't have a transponder, shoot it down. I also
believe anyone should be allowed to shoot down any drone he can
if it's close enough to his property. If it's within gunfire
range of your property, it's too close.
The military base in our town has pretty good security from what
I can see; but I wonder if they're equipped to shoot down
drones? I think they're concentrating on other things more. If
you have a pass, you can get on by showing the pass and a photo
ID. That's fine. If you don't have that pass, they make you
get out of your car, open everything so they can check for bombs
-- that happened to me on my first delivery to the post. I
have a pass now. But I wonder if they're prepared for any drone
attacks? I could be wrong but I doubt it.
