Almost two months and who knows how many phone calls later, I
finally got the check to reimburse me for the $500 put on my
credit card for the damages to the rental car. What a relief.
I was beginning to wonder if they'd ever straighten it out since
I was getting letters demanding I pay the rest of it.

Sorry it took so long, but glad it turned out good at least.

And I got it deposited today, just in time to qualify as being
in the bank in February when I do my end-of-the month
calculations to see how close to my budget I am.

So I did the final numbers. Money was tighter in January when
I paid the February credit card bills; but I still got that
total down by $321. I'm still not where I want to be with
the bank balances; but the total is over $1000 at then end of
February than it was at the end of January. I need that money
in there for taxes and other bills that come due in April and
May, so I need to keep building up the balances. I'm $521
short of my budgeted goal.
The credit card balances for March are looking good. I think I
make that total go down by $1000 by the end of March. More good
news is that there are three paychecks in March from the
newspaper so I can pay down the credit cards without worrying
about having enough cash in the bank.

I did my federal taxes and mailed them in registered about a
week ago. I will get over $2000 back, I think that will be
used toward another vehicle eventually. I started one of the
two state taxes (working in one, living in another, money back
from the one worked in, and paying in the one I live in). I
started all of them online with an H&R Block program, but they
wanted to charge me without letting me print out copies for
personal records. The option was there, and my printer
connection works fine, but it wouldnt do it. Plus they found
fault that they should have easily kept from occuring during the
input portion. So the federal was rejected, and I had it set
up for them to be paid out of the federal return. Since they
refused to answer my email complaint, I decided I would just do
it myself. That way they cant collect on a sorry program and
sorry customer service.

You're ahead of me with the taxes. H&R Block may not survive if
you ask me. I'm not sure they can adapt to changes in how
people file. I'm also not sure they are making enough money at
their brick-and-mortar stores to survive.
What I find objectionable is that the IRS doesn't have its own
program so people can file directly with them. Do we really
need all these other companies? Perhaps for advice, yes, but I
think anyone should be able to file easily on the IRS site by
entering the numbers he has.

Of course, H & R Block saw the handwriting on the wall and
realized they needed to make changes -- thus their expansion
into other kinds of services. As a company, they don't inspire
confidence in me -- although I see the price of their stock
seems to be rising continually over the past decade. But what
can you say about a company that messed up its own tax returns?
Or sent out mail to people with their Social Security numbers on
the envelopes?

I think they are going downhill as well on tax preparation. I
have used them in the past and they did okay, but the language
they used wasnt always easy to understand, you have to guess on
some things. I just despised the customer service recently.
Not even someone from India would return the query and address
my complaint.

Many companies have lousy customer service. I got so tired of
not knowing what was going on with the woman from the car rental
company, I decided to call her every day until she called me
back. Her message (no one answers their phones anymore) said
she'd call everyone back the same day or the next -- within 24
hours. What a lie! So I called one day and then the next and
then again. I was going to start calling her twice a day.
When she did call me back, she got my name wrong, "Is Curtis
there?" She had the claim number -- I would have thought she
would have had the file open with all the information; and she
had my name too since that was on the message I left. First
she said the check had already been mailed. Then she said it
had been approved on the 13th and then said it would be mailed
that day.
I feel pretty sure she felt overworked and overwhelmed; but most
of that was her own fault. She wasted a lot of time on my
claim. I had called her in February with the contact
information for the other insurance company since they said
would pay it. Instead of sending them the information they
needed, she kept sending me letters telling me to pay -- I can
remember at least two -- a total waste of time -- and postage
and envelopes. She would have gotten the money fast from the
insurance company if she had faxed them the information they
needed instead of mailing it to me.
I see stupid stuff like this at the newspaper too. I got a
message the other day to stop a customer, and the note with it
said the customer had paid far ahead and had a fairly big amount
of money in the account -- but wanted to cancel. The note said
customer service tried to call them and couldn't reach them.
Then yesterday, the customer called me and wondered why she
wasn't getting papers. I had left a note for her together with
the note I got -- and told her to call if she wanted the money
refunded -- she said she never got it -- that's possible since
it could have blown out of the tube. Now tell me who called in
and canceled the papers -- a trickster maybe? Obviously
customer service didn't try very hard to reach that woman,
probably because they thought they might have to refund money if
they did.
I got another message last week saying I had missed a customer
-- and that they had stopped one day and started again the next.
"Please be sure to deliver there," they said. Huh? I had
proof -- that customer had never been stopped and restarted. I
had the proof in black and white. The customer probably was
missing a paper since it gets thrown -- a neighbor could have
picked it, the trash collector could have, anyone driving by
could have, or it could have blown away. But why invent a story
that wasn't true? Are they incompetent, indifferent, drinking
on the job, on drugs or what?
