The Kiva loan system seems a great idea. I
am making final donations to Children International where the
child I have sponsored for years is now graduating the program.
What a bittersweet time! Through many photos and personal
letters, I have watched him grow from a small boy into an
empowered young man. Perhaps a Kiva loan is in my future! How
do you decide which loan(s) to participate in? There are so
many good options!

One of my sister's did something with Children International.
A fine program, to be sure.
Odd you'd ask how I decide since how I decided on this loan
was different from the others in the past. This time, I checked
out which countries I hadn't lent in -- you can do that if you
want. Then they show you the loans in those countries.
There are many ways to sift through the listings. It depends
on your preferences, I guess -- and sometimes for me, it almost
seems random. Sometimes I choose a loan at Kiva just because it
feels right. If you click on "lend," various options show up.
You can look at listings by men or women -- or by sector like
agriculture, housing, transportation, etc. Or by other
attributes like green, Islamic finance, water, vulnerable
groups, etc. It really is up to you and what you feel like
doing.
You can also join "teams" -- and there are all kinds of teams.
They have religious ones: they have a Mormon team, a Catholic
team, etc. They even have a group of atheists who lend.
The Catholic one is sponsoring a loan in Paraguay that interests
me:

HTML http://www.kiva.org/lend/994333
I've lent to several people in Muslim countries; and the reason
I do that is to send a signal that people in Christian countries
care. Poor people in Muslim countries need to know that, I
think.
But there are so many worthy people, it can be hard to decide
which ones to lend to.
I had a little money at PayPal and moved that to Kiva; and
yesterday I moved some money from a bank account to PayPal so I
can move it to Kiva in a few days. That's the part I don't
like -- it takes days for funds from your bank account to clear
PayPal -- and you're waiting and waiting. If you have money at
PayPal, you can use it at once at Kiva -- it's the other
transfer that takes time. Today when I looked, I see some
people at Kiva made payments on their loans, and I have enough
to relend to someone else. Then when the funds clear PayPal in
a few days, I can use those too.
You lose very little money there, very little. If you ever need
the money, you can get it back -- it would take a while, but you
can get most of it back. If you don't ever need it, you can
have the account set up that Kiva can keep it all if the account
goes inactive for so many years.

I checked my email -- and five people had made payments on their
loans at Kiva. That explains why I had that money there. I
liked this listing from East Timor.

You can see right through me about that, can't you; but if it

I got called into work again Friday when I was scheduled off.
The nice thing though was that I also was let go early.
Thursday night/Friday morning wore me out since every three
months I get an extra 1000 papers to throw at houses of
non-customers. I get the papers for the regular customers
first. They start early. Then when done with those, you go
back to get the 1000 freebies and the Wall Street Journals.
That was about 9 hours of driving, and it wore me out. But
when Dominos called, I said I'd go in.
No papers tonight! Woohoo! I just worked 9 hours at Dominos
and will be glad to have some time off.
I also opened the Christmas cards I've gotten so far. I wonder
what the mailman thinks about all the cards I get? But I opened
them and counted the money. It was good to send out my cards
to them early since I've got more money already than I did last
year. So far I have $283 in cash, $430 in checks, and $50 in
gift cards. We'll see how many more cards I get.
If customers leave cards in their tubes, I leave a thank you
note then; but this year I want to give the people who mail me
cards notes too. Last year I didn't get around to it.

I had to take one of my cars to the transmission shop. It's a
very good shop and my mechanic advised me to since the car
probably needed more than he could do. So I crawled along in
traffic, pulling over several times to let other people get
around me; and the guy talked with me about it, took it for a
brief spin himself, looked at a few things and concluded it
would take more than a simple repair. His estimate was $600 to
$1000. That sounds bad, but at least he didn't tell me the
other solution would be a new transmission for several thousand
dollars.
Then I walked home. That was about a mile and a half. On the
way home, I noticed the Methodist church about a block from my
house no longer had the "for sale" sign on it. I asked a woman
on her porch if she knew about it? She knew it had been sold
but didn't know who bought it.

Oh my, Piper, I had my own dreadful time with a checking
account. It took me two days to figure out; but the good news
is I had hundreds of more dollars in it than I thought. I was
so boggled, I gave up the first day. The next day, I went back
to November when I knew my figures agreed with theirs.
Other money things. I called the transmission shop and they
found a transmission. They'll be working on it next week; and
the good news there is there's money in the bank to pay the
bill. I was beginning to wonder if I should buy another car.
I'd rather run this one as far as I can and save up for another
one so I don't have to borrow.

I made it clear to the bank the amount they had failed to
reimburse me. Even sent them copies of everything. So what do
they do? They reimburse me again, but still leave me off by
several cents, though the math was clear. I suppose, at this
point, I'll take the loss for the sake of my sanity. ::)
Good there's hope with the transmission. Finally.

Running late with the financial stuff; but the bad news is my
credit card balances went up $200 from at end of January from
where they had been at the end of December. If the rental car
would have paid me promptly for the $500 they put on my card and
which an insurance company either did or will reimburse them,
I'd have been ahead.
The bad news is that my bank balances aren't even close to my
projections -- $1450 short. I was trying to build up the
balances for April in case I have a big IRS tax bill -- and to
pay the property tax early, etc. A lot of bills come due in
the spring. Of course, Most of February's bills have already
been paid. My AAA membership is the only real bill left now.
I could choose not to pay some of March's bills in February and
get my bank balances up that way; but that would be an
artificial juggling of the books.
The other day I bought a 2 liter bottle of Nehi peach soda for
99 cents. I love it. The same company makes RC cola and other
flavors, all for 99 cents. Very economical and I love the peach
soda.
