FDA Approves First Drug To Boost Women's Sexual Desire
By: Kerry Date: August 19, 2015, 3:01 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
I heard this story about a new drug this morning on NPR
HTML http://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2015/08/18/432704214/addyi-fda-approves-drug-to-boost-womens-desire.<br
/> Allegedly it's supposed to help women who want to want to
have sex but don't want to have sex. Of course, the
pharmaceutical company is touting it as an important step
forward for women.
The little pink pill, known generically as flibanserin, will be
sold under the brand name Addyi beginning Oct. 17, according to
its maker, Sprout Pharmaceuticals. The medicine is to be taken
daily to treat premenopausal women suffering from hypoactive
sexual desire disorder, which is essentially a sudden,
unexplained loss of any desire to have sex.
"Addyi is a game changer, in my opinion, for women's health,"
said Cynthia Whitehead, Sprout's CEO. "For decades, millions of
women have been waiting for a medical solution to restore their
sexual desire. And I'm thrilled that today the decision is
finally being turned over to women and their health care
providers regarding their sexual health."
Critics say it's not that effective in the first place and
secondly has dangerous side effects.
Some women faint when they take it. Others wake up so groggy the
morning after it could be dangerous for them to drive to work.
And there could be long-term risks from taking a psychoactive
drug daily for years. Addyi works by altering the levels of
three important neurotransmitters — norepinephrine, serotonin
and dopamine.
"To have any chance of benefit from this drug they're going to
have to take it every day for months on end, years," says Cindy
Pearson of the National Women's Health Network. "We just don't
know what the long-term effects will be of changing brain
chemistry in this way."
The Verge
HTML http://www.theverge.com/2015/8/18/9174377/fda-approves-sex-drug-for-women-pink-viagra-flibanserin<br
/>reports it doesn't even work that well.
Sadly, the drug doesn't work that well. Somewhere between 8 and
13 percent of women who take the drug daily experience an
average of 0.5 more "sexually satisfying" events per month.
That's... not much. And its side-effects include drowsiness,
dizziness, and fainting.
The scant benefit, along with the side-effects, may be why the
U.S. Food and Drug Administration rejected the drug twice before
today. A panel in June recommended putting the pill — then known
by its chemical name, flibanserin — on the market with an 18-6
vote, with certain safety warnings. "The unmet need seems to be
so strong that even for a drug with rather modest benefit, I
think approving the product with strong limitations seems to be
the right step at this point," Tobias Gerhard, a drug safety
expert and member of the panel, told The New York Times in June.

Heaven sakes what next! I do see the problem..two or three kids
and lack of finances and the sex drive is swallowed up on other
things...when the mind is on things to worry about, that goes
out of the window.
I think it is crazy to put chemicals into the body when there is
not a life and death problem. I hate all the stuff I HAVE to
take into my body...most people "these days" are walking
chemical factories!!
I wonder what these new pills would do to the liver and kidneys.
If not now...later!!
Hummmm
They are promoting this as a women's issue; but I
wonder how many brutish husbands who don't do anything to help
around the house and who want to treat their wives like sex toys
actually turn off their wives. So then it could be the
husbands helping to create the problem and then telling their
wives there's something wrong with them and go get these pills.
Maybe some talking things out would help -- maybe just talking
to their minister if not a therapist would help. Yes, I can
see women getting turned off by having the kids to handle
(perhaps by herself), worrying about money (while maybe the
husband spends it freely -- my sister's first husband did that)
-- trying to get all the housework done while holding down a
full time job. I'd really like to know more about the husbands
of these women. The problem may be them, and pills ain't gonna
fix that.

It can't be good because they advise people with any liver
problems from using them. In other words, it damages the
liver. If you have a really healthy liver, go ahead and feel
free to damage it a little. If it's already damaged though,
better not get on this drug.

I heard that viagra for men, increases blood flow, which
supports erectness, where this medication actually changes the
mindset of a woman to desire sex more (although its
effectiveness is far worse than viagra), and that "ANY" mind
altering drug is not a good idea to promote.

One of the drugs side-effects is fatigue (and
even passing out!). LOL Many women can't handle sex because
they're exhausted, so how is a drug that makes a woman more
tired supposed to help?!! I suppose if she passes out, though,
she might get thru the act okay. ;)

I despise that insurance can pay for v*iag*ra. When there are
so many things insurance doesnt cover, they do cover that!! >:(
Passing out might solve the problem. Maybe the male
partner could video everything to prove how successful the drug
had been.
But why market a new drug? Why not prescribe Qaaludes?
Allegedly they worked for Bill Cosby when he gave them to women.
Why not prescribe marijuana? That's supposed to increase
libido.
I can't believe they okayed this drug after refusing before,
just because people might say women should have drugs if men do.
It's obviously a money-making scheme aimed at women who want
to please men -- and doesn't work that well and has serious
side-effects. I can see the lawsuits coming.
It's crazy to me. If a woman has problems because she's
overworking or doesn't feel that comfortable with her partner,
these pills aren't going to help. These pills may benefit the
men they're with -- I don't see it as helping most women
although it will be marketed that way.
Birth control pills were marketed as helping women. Did they?
Yes, they made it possible for women to have sex without
getting pregnant; but did that help women? I think it helped
men get free sex more easily without being ready to get married
first to get it. [quote author=bradley
It's pretty typical today to hand out pills to people
who have psychological problems. They don't get the help they
need. They aren't told how to solve the problems that are
putting stress on them. The current medical theory seems to
be you can change behavior by altering the brain chemistry; but
I believe stress can affect brain chemistry which in turn can
create certain behavior patterns.
You can get around the word censor by using extra size things
like this and get the word viagra :
viagra
When it shows up, the disappears and you get the word you want.
