The importance of prayer and fasting
By: Poppy Date: July 19, 2015, 7:51 am

For a couple of years now God has been showing me the importance
of prayer and fasting and this is so encouraging. Nancy,
perhaps you will remember the blog I shared on fasting last
year. This just underlines the truths I discovered.

Amen.
Amazing testimony. God has been showing me how important fasting
is and this just totally supports and underlines it. I'm so
encouraged. I've just ordered Marilyn Hickey's book. I remember
how vital it felt when I learned about the infilling of the Holy
Spirit and praying in tongues, and this teaching on fasting
feels vital too. And just as many denied the need for the Holy
Spirit, there will be many who deny the need to fast. Maybe this
could be a key to revival - a re-opening of the old wells of
Living Water.

[font=trebuchet ms]I've thought of fasting again. I did a week
long liquid-only fast in May. God helped me through it, I
'heard' the singing after praying if you remember, but Kevin
fared no better.
Nothing seems to help him. I'm at a loss.
(Didn't watch the video yet. Will, when time.)
Yeah, maybe I will fast again. Food is not too appealing
anyway.

Just to do it off our own accord isn't enough and would probably
achieve nothing. We must have a specific spiritual reason for
doing it and prayerfully prepare first until will know the time
is right. It's like Sid Roth says in the video we can't just
copy Marilyn but need to find out what God requires of us
individually.
What is really coming over to me is just how many Christians are
being stirred to fast and/or find out more about fasting. It is
as if God is moving in power in this area.

[font=trebuchet ms]It wasn't difficult abstaining from food.
God takes away the hunger. Physical hunger is nothing compared
to spiritual hunger, anyway. Fasting puts you in a 'zone' where
you are very aware of God-- a place we need to consistently be.

Of course while any time is fine, Lent is the time it needs to
be done. Here's a nice little page at the EWTN website:

Most of the fasts mentioned in the bible were not forty day
fasts. When it needs to be done is when God directs you.
Occasionally or once a week; an individual approach is
necessary.
And God doesn't take away my hunger but helps me live with it.

[font=trebuchet ms]^ ^ After reading the link:
I did no solid food, because I normally eat very little meat
other than chicken or fish.
I didn't know Catholics fast every Friday, as penance for sin.
I'll begin this Friday. Though I think it important to repent
promptly from sin. But, accepting penance would help us
tangibly 'do something' to express we are serious in our
repentance.
What Scriptures tell us to fast as a penance? (Oh, some are
listed in the link. I need to take some time to look them up.)
(I'll watch the video, too, Poppy. I actually experienced less
hunger as the week progressed. I was really only hungry the
first day, then it faded. That may differ between people.)

Well, most don't, and I must admit I failed often in that
observance myself.
Now I will throw in a personal opinion which I try not to do:
Fasting should be a thing of the heart, not to be taken too
literally. What I mean is, don't hurt yourself or make yourself
get sick or dizzy. God doesn't want you to be sick to your
stomach. He knows if your intentions are sincere, and if you
need a little bite to stay well then go ahead.
