I agree Kerry. The lifting of the serpent
and the lifting up of Jesus were/are both about healing. The
crucifixion is a strangely tragic and beautiful thing, all at
once.
I think when Jesus said we must be willing to carry our cross,
it means we must also be willing to sacrifice, to both live and
die for others. Otherwise we have no place in the
Kingdom.

CC,
I was thinking. Questions are good, provided someone is
honestly seeking answers to consider and not just fishing for
trouble. How else will anyone know the truth of things? It
would be worse to never ask and just believe rumors and
misinformation.
Thank you for your great responses. Father Serpa made some good
points, especially that, "To behold the image of Jesus hanging
on the cross is to recognize the greatest event in history."
The image of Jesus on the cross IS disturbing, knowing how badly
He must have suffered. But He died there for you and me and all
of us, so despite the brutality we witness there, we also see
the very essense of love, because real love always demands
sacrifice. Jesus gave all.

Oh, you know me. I get prickly. If a person suggests or infers
that we worship a dead Christ, I mean, come on - that's just
silly. A thoughtful person with a thoughtful question would
never word it like that, yes?
For me, the crucifix is a symbol of being present at Calvary.
By the way, that is why we have them above the altars, because
Mass is a Cosmic event that places us at Calvary.
Remember this prophecy from the Old Testament: "For from the
rising of the sun even unto the going down of the same my name
shall be great among the Gentiles; and in every place incense
shall be offered unto my name, and a pure offering: for my name
shall be great among the heathen, saith the Lord of hosts"
(Malachi 1:11)
The Mass is Calvary re-presnted in time, a cosmic event that God
allows us to be present at, from the rising of the sun, the Mass
is being celebrated somewhere in the world at every moment.
And now hear what the priest says at Mass:
"You are indeed Holy, O Lord, and all you have created rightly
gives you praise, for through your Son our Lord Jesus Christ, by
the power and working of the Holy Spirit, you give life to all
things and make them holy, and you never cease to gather a
people to yourself, so that from the rising of the sun to its
setting a pure sacrifice may be offered to your name. Therefore,
O Lord, we humbly implore you: by the same Spirit graciously
make holy these gifts we have brought to you for consecration,
that they may become the Body and Blood of your Son our Lord
Jesus Christ at whose command we celebratethese mysteries."
The Mass fullfills the prophecy. Think: How can we offer a pure
sacrafice from the rising of the sun even unto the going down of
the same when Christ offered the once for all sacrafice? Simple:
God lets us re-present that same sacrafice throughout time.
Calvary is made present, in time, by God's grace at Mass.

I have something better even than excellent - the Catholic
crucifix in preference to the Protestant cross is exactly right
for it clearly shows and tells exactly what it is all about -
crucified Christ on one side and the risen Christ on the reverse
- so we do not raise up, pray to and worship two pieces of dead
wood - twinc
