Why are people betting so heavily on the name Alice for the new
royal baby? Why Alice? For Prince Philip's mother, Princess
Alice of Battenberg?

Well he or she will have at least three names. Prince George's
full name is George Alexander Louis. George after King George
VI, Alexander after the queen, one of whose names is Alexandra
and Louis after Lord Mountbatten. A girl could be Alice after
Prince Phillip's mother as you said and it could also be Mary
after the queen who also has Mary as one of her names. She
could also be Elizabeth after both the Queen and queen mother.
Or what about Diana?

I think it's safe to say we can rule Diana out. And Camilla.
The list I saw had some people betting on Carole after the
Duchness' mother, but somehow I doubt that too.
