What is the Gospel?
By: Gaffer Date: April 20, 2015, 2:33 pm

What is the Gospel? The word is used frequently enough in the
New Testament, but what is it? What does the word "Gospel"
mean to you? When we read that the Apostles preached the
Gospel, what were they saying?

It means The Good News.

Off the top of my pointed head:
When I hear the word "Gospel" I think "Good News."
The Good News is that God has paved a road of redemption for
mankind. Messiah has come and opened a way to be reconciled to
God. It is the news of salvation, offered to the world.

Of course, we also think, "Matthew, Mark,
Luke, and John." These books of the bible tell us primarily
what Jesus said and did.

to mind, yes. But did Jesus preach about those things? If
so, what did he say?
Jesus later told Peter that flesh and blood hadn't revealed to
him that he was Messiah. True enough, Peter's brother had told
him they had met Messiah; but did Peter really understand or
believe? Was it really revealed to him yet? And Jesus
almost reluctantly told the woman at the well that he was
Messiah, but only after she had already guessed it more or less.

It means The Good News.
Good news about what?
Mark 1:14 Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into
Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God
15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is
at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.
This was before the crucifixion and resurrection. Jesus
couldn't have been preaching about those, could he?

[quote=From Wikipedia
]Main article: The gospel
The word gospel derives from the Old English gōd-spell
(rarely godspel), meaning "good news" or "glad tidings". The
word comes from the Greek euangelion, or "good news". The gospel
was considered the "good news" of the coming Kingdom of Messiah,
and of redemption through the life and death and resurrection of
Jesus, the central Christian message.

So do I, but it's a little surprising that it's before
the crucifixion and resurrection. I read it to mean that if we
repent and enter the kingdom, everything else that needs to
follow will follow. If we repent and want to lead better
lives, we can trust God to take care of the rest.

We have Mark 1:15 (TLB) (which was already
mentioned):
“At last the time has come!” he announced.
“God’s Kingdom is near! Turn from your sins and act on this
glorious news!”

Matthew 24:14 (TLB):
“And the Good News about the Kingdom will be
preached throughout the whole world, so that all nations will
hear it, and then, finally, the end will come."
And:
John 18:37 (TLB)
37 Pilate replied, “But you are a king then?”
“Yes,” Jesus said. “I was born for that purpose. And I came to
bring truth to the world. All who love the truth are my
followers.”
This quote is probably major, kind of like
Jesus is giving His job description:

Luke 4:18-19 (TLB)
18-19 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me; he has appointed me to
preach Good News to the poor; he has sent me to heal the
brokenhearted and to announce that captives shall be released
and the blind shall see, that the downtrodden shall be freed
from their oppressors, and that God is ready to give blessings
to all who come to him.”

Mark 1:14 Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus
came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God
15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is
at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.

Kerry: This was before the crucifixion and resurrection.

he?
What do you mean by "those"? Do you mean you
don't believe Jesus was preaching about redemption,
reconciliation, or salvation? (referring back to my first
post?)
It seems the Kingdom of God is the objective
that Jesus preached, and I suppose the component parts needed to
reach the objective are included in the Gospel of Christ:
grace, faith, redemption, justification, sanctification,
salvation, glorification, etc. All these things fulfill God's
plan for humanity.

I don't see it, no. I see him urging people to repent.

things to the message that I don't see Jesus mentioning. I
noted too that the quote from Wikipedia neglected to mention
repentance.
I think Jonah preached the Gospel in Nineveh. The Gospel is
said to be "everlasting" in Revelation. I think it's an
eternal truth. I think this same everlasting Gospel had been
known among the Greeks.
Acts 17:27 That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might
feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every
one of us:
28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain
also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.
29 Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not
to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or
stone, graven by art and man's device.
Then Paul goes on to add things not yet revealed to them:
30 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now
commandeth all men every where to repent:
31 Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge
the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained;
whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath
raised him from the dead.
32 And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some
mocked: and others said, We will hear thee again of this matter.
For me, the Good News is that God will help us if we recognize
the error of our ways and want to do better. God will provide a
way to help us. That is having faith in God; and men can have
faith in God's ability to save them without knowing all the
details. All those details aren't part of the Gospel to me.
What is critical to me is believing God is Benevolent and has
never abandoned man to a hopeless state. He is a rewarder of
those who seek Him.
