By the beautiful sea is a phrase so true
it’s been used as a song title.
There’s the sun, the salty air, the ocean breeze and the sand
beneath your feet.
For some, experiencing this wonderful combination is a vacation;
for others it’s a daily way of life -- including a variety of
birds

Seagulls
Seagulls are the most common birds seen on shorelines around the
world. They range in size from approximately 11 inches to more
than 2 feet. Gulls are scavengers. They are often seen following
fishing boats or around seafood refineries, and in large numbers
they are considered nuisances. They’re clever birds. They drop
mollusks on hard rocks to crack their shells, and stamp the
ground to simulate rain so earthworms will crawl to the surface.
The rarest gulls in the world are lava gulls. They have dark
sooty plumage, and live on the lava rocks of the Galapagos
Islands.

Pelicans
Pelicans are social birds who travel in flocks, and are famous
for their large throat pouches they use to catch fish. Some
species dive for their food, while others form lines in the
water and force fish into shallow areas by flapping their wings.
Pelicans don't store fish in their pouches. They use them as
nets, and the pouch of the American white pelican can hold up to
several gallons. They tip back their heads to drain the water
then swallow the fish. Their young feed on the fish by sticking
their bills into the adult’s throat.

Sandpipers, Herons and Egrets
A wide variety of sandpipers can be found up and down the
shorelines of most continents, including Europe, Asia and North
America. They are a familiar sight to beachgoers as their sharp
bills poke the sand for insects. Sandpipers are short-legged
birds slightly larger than a teacup, whereas most herons and
egrets are long-legged waders. Herons and egrets are similar in
species, and you are more apt to find them in salt marshes. They
prefer the calmer still waters as they stand patiently waiting
for their prey to swim by.

Albatrosses and Petrels
You will only see albatrosses and petrels on shore during
breeding season. Otherwise, they spend the rest of their time at
sea. Albatrosses have the largest wingspan of any bird,
measuring up to 11 feet. Both species have an intricate wing
design that allows them to glide for hours without flapping, and
they often travel thousands of miles. These birds are encased in
maritime lore. In “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” the
albatross is symbolized as a sacred, and storm petrels get their
name because it's believed their presence means a storm is
coming.

Penguins and Puffins
Not all seashores are tropical or heated. Although Atlantic
puffins and penguins have many similarities, such as a tuxedo
appearance, excellent diving abilities and mating for life, they
are not related. Sixty percent of Atlantic puffins live near
Iceland. They have been dubbed as sea parrots because of their
bright colorful bills. Unlike penguins they are not a flightless
bird, and they are swift in the water or in the air. Although
most penguins live in or near the Antarctic region, the rare
Galapagos penguin does enjoy spending its time on the shores of
the equator.
