Psalms and Proverbs
By: Piper Date: April 7, 2015, 11:41 am
---------------------------------------------------------
Hi, Colin. I know that you like the Psalms
and Proverbs and find much instruction within them, so I thought
I'd start a thread where we can talk about various verses we
read there. I love the Psalms, also, because they always remind
us to praise God, and, like David, I love to sing (and post)
praise. Join in and give us your thoughts as you are led.
Thought I'd start with a portion of Psalm 86, that I was reading
this morning:
Psalm 86:6-12
King James Version (KJV)
6 Give ear, O Lord, unto my prayer; and attend to the voice of
my supplications.
7 In the day of my trouble I will call upon thee: for thou wilt
answer me.
8 Among the gods there is none like unto thee, O Lord; neither
are there any works like unto thy works.
9 All nations whom thou hast made shall come and worship before
thee, O Lord; and shall glorify thy name.
10 For thou art great, and doest wondrous things: thou art God
alone.
11 Teach me thy way, O Lord; I will walk in thy truth: unite my
heart to fear thy name.
12 I will praise thee, O Lord my God, with all my heart: and I
will glorify thy name for evermore.
When I think of you, Colin, I think of
praying for understanding of Scripture. In verse 6 and 7, David
asks God to "give ear" unto his prayer. I think of Jesus
thanking His Father for listening to His prayer, remarking that
He knows that His Father always hears Him, but as a witness to
the people, Jesus asks and His Father answers.
What should we ask for when we pray? Certainly for
understanding of God and His Way, for wisdom, and for the grace
to share what we are given in order to help others, as you
always try to do, my friend. I hope you don't mind if I quote a
beautiful prayer that you submitted elsewhere. I love that you
prayed Scripture and fashioned your request to God directly from
His Word:

Lord, my Father in Heaven, Lord, if I be born
again let me have eyes to see the majesty of your kingdom and
ears to hear your glorious voice. Lord, give me a tongue that I
may praise you in righteousness as the angels do above, give me
a heart that is filled with truth, and let all deceit be removed
from it. Let me have hands as I am in your hands of council, and
let me have nostrils that you have breathed into with that
breath that made man alive, and let no evil pass through my
lips. If I am to have flesh let me be flesh of your flesh, and
keep me not naked. Let me put on wisdom as my garment and
righteousness as my seamless robe. Let me be washed white as
snow and give me strength to climb your mountain and feed me
with your word. Let me dwell in your house forever and be by
your side to the right. I love you Lord, and as I walk this
earth show me with your gospels, and let my feet be forever
clean. Let me stand upright as a man in your eyes, and let every
day be the day I please you. Forever and always let me do things
for your namesake with you helping me. I will always love you my
Lord.

What a beautiful example of supplication to
the Lord!
David said that, "In the day of my trouble I will call upon
thee: for thou wilt answer me." Here, again, we see the
confidence that God hears us when we pray. Jesus said that in
this world we will have trouble. David affirms that when
trouble is our lot, we may call upon God and, with expectation,
wait for His answer, for deliverance.
There are no works like those of God. There is no other God
like our God. All nations shall worship before Him, and all
shall glorify His Holy Name. He alone is God and all wondrous
things are of Him.
David prays, "Teach me thy way, O Lord; I will walk in thy
truth: unite my heart to fear thy name." I think of Jesus
asking, "What is truth?" The Way of the Lord is truth, and it
is the Way we desire to walk. A fervent prayer, then, could be
to "unite my heart to fear thy name." We long for our hearts to
be united to His, and if we fear (highly respect with awe) His
name, we will be like David, in God's grace, and He will not
turn His face away, but will teach us to walk in His Way, and in
His Truth.
In verse 12, we read: "I will praise thee, O Lord my God, with
all my heart: and I will glorify thy name for evermore."
I think every prayer must begin with praise of God, for who He
is, for what He has done and is doing. As in your prayer,
Colin: "Lord give me a tongue that I may praise you in
righteousness as the angels do above, give me a heart that is
filled with truth, and let all deceit be removed from it."
Hands of council, wisdom and righteousness as our garments, as
our robes to be covered with--all powerful things to pray for.
It is written, "The root of wisdom is to fear the Lord; the
treasures of wisdom are within the parables of knowledge." Much
more could be said about wisdom--a topic in itself, and a
beautiful one--but, I will finish with this: "The Word of God
is the fountain of wisdom."
A fountain of wisdom--ever flowing. Can we ever hope to
understand all the ways of God? In seven lifetimes, how much
wisdom can we attain? I think that God's Way, His truth, is as
vast as the ocean. But, as is our righteousness, so will He
give to us understanding.
We can only pray as you have, as David did:

Teach me thy way, O Lord; I will walk in thy
truth: unite my heart to fear thy name.

I can't think of any other person I would rather have beside
me when we come before the Lord Piper, then you. You know we
must show the Lord we love him and his way, his truth and his
Spirit. The riches we have been given from above, let no man
take away from us Lord . We need them to glorify your name.
Build us up with the things not seen that we may show your
greatness. Forgive us when fall short for who is it that can
measure up to you my Father and let all here on this forum come
to know your loving kindness. We all come out from that place of
sin so from here on let us walk in your glory father that we may
know you and us that glory to praise you Holy name forever. Let
me and Nancy bring unto you a people you will call your own and
a people that will love knowing they are yours. A people raised
up to do your will and let that be pleasing unto you my Lord. We
love you and will forever. Amen.

There is nothing better than sharing Jesus,
in all His many facets, with others. The well never runs dry.
Living water. I can't imagine myself any kind of leader, Colin,
but I know everyone from the multiple forums we all frequent is
seeking. I know they love and want to know Christ better. It
is good to help one another. Yes, may the Spirit fill us all.
Amen and amen.
