SS CT T2 5/12 ECLECTIC MELTING POT ESSAY
   DIR By: savannah16

       ---------------------------------------------------------
Early Cape Town could be described as an eclectic melting pot of
culture, race and religion. There are many different reasons
that it could be considered this.
Cape Town has many different cultures, races and religions. The
Dutch, Jan Van Riebeek the founder, are a large part. We have
Dutch names: Pietmaritzburg, Bloemfontien and Stellenbosch. Many
of the houses in Groot Constantia have the style and
architecture of the Dutch. Then we have the Arabs. They
influenced the Afrikaans words: baklei (fight), sjambok (whip)
and blatjang (chutney). They also influenced our modern day
numbers. Many workers in the Dutch kitchens couldn't speak High
Dutch, so they created "Kitchen Dutch", which is like Afrikaans
today. We also have a huge Muslim influence. The foods: sosatie,
bootie, bredie and samoosas are Muslim. We have many mosques
here in the Western Cape, where Muslims pray. Another culture
would be the Khoikhoi. They were the first people living here in
Cape Town. At first, them and the Dutch had a peaceful
relationship, but it resulted in fighting, and the khi were
       defeated.
We have many different types of people living here in the
Western Cape, (specifically Cape Town). That is why we are
       called the RAINBOW NATION.
