       Oh death

       Oh Death
The icy ground crunched beneath my paws. Or at least it would
have if I were an ordinary cat. But, alas, I am not. I have too
many things to do for that.
This night was freezing cold. The coldest this forest had ever
seen before. My destination wasn't too much farther. The
branches of the trees drooped with the weight of the snow and
ice. There was no moon tonight. I'm sure my paws would have been
numb if I could feel the cold. I spotted two cats guarding the
entrance to a camp, each of them cold and shivering. I noted
small icicles forming on their whiskers. Neither were my mark
tonight. I slipped passed them with ease. They didn't see me.
Though they may have felt me. Some do from time to time. Not
that it matters very much. I padded across the clearing that
these cats gathered in during the day. Past the den where the
'warriors' slept. Past the den where the 'leader' slept. Past
the den where the 'medicine cat' slept. Forgive me for not
putting much emphasis on their rolls. To me, they are all just
cats. And I some point in time, I will come to take them too.
I entered the den, where a small kit slept, just far enough away
from his mother for me to be needed. There was a small draft
from a hole in the den. Few noticed it. But it was there. Just
enough for the temperature to rise or drop a little in what they
most likely considered a safe place. I made sure to look
presentable before going for him. We wouldn't want to scare the
little kit now would we. Reaching out with a black and white
paw, I gently pulled the soul from the body. He began to stir as
I finished. My job was done. But I decided to stay anyways. A
few seconds later the soul raised his head, looking around
confused. By then, an escort had come for him. If I remember
correctly, it was a young apprentice I had taken a year or two
ago when she fell ill. She managed to calm him before he got
upset, and began to convince him to come with her. I must say,
he was very stubborn. He 'didn't want to go with a strange cat.
He wanted his Mama.' It amazed me how he completely oblivious to
his body laying not a tail length away from him. The younger
ones always seem to do the most unexpected things when I come to
visit. At last, the she-cat convinced him to go, saying that his
Mama will join him later. I can promise you she wasn't lying.
But that, I think, is a story for another time.
I watched the two go, disappearing into nothing but star light.
I always wondered what it was like up there, for those who could
pass on. Though I never lingered on it too much. I am much too
busy for that. I sat there a few more moments after they had
gone. When the mother woke, she would find her kit cold with
frost in his fur. I have no doubt that she would be devastated
when she found out, possibly even blaming herself. I rose to my
own paws and left the den. There's always work to be done.
But this time, what I had failed to notice, was a second small
scrap of fur, hidden in her mother's long fur, watching the
entire thing. Watching her brother leave. And then watching me.
