prologue
"What's my name, Beau?" my voice echoed in the back of my head.
I opened an eye, squinting against the bright light of the lamp
above me. I felt the stings of needles in my dull, almost
furless skin, and the coldness of the liquids in my veins. My
eyes fluttered shut again.
"Well, what's on your leg?" the macaw replied boredly, picking
at his claws with his large beak. I remembered glancing down at
my front leg, twisting it to and fro. The corners of my mouth
twisted into a frown. "I can't read," I complained to the bird
infront of me, who in reply let out a groan and leaned forward,
sticking his head through the bars of the dog cage. "Experiment
five," he read, pulling his head back. "Well, aren't you lucky!
One of the first experiments, one of the first out," he chirped.
I woke up to hear the noisy chattering of the humans, then the
squeaking of the opening dog cage door, and then the thunk as my
own body hit the cold metal of the cage. I lifted my head,
wobbling as dots blurred my vision. The cold floor of the cage
met the side of my face quickly.
Even further back in my memories, I heard the anguished cries of
another creature. "Don't take me! Don't take me! It screamed,
flapping its useless, flightless wings. I rushed to the bars of
my cage, watching the bird-like creature squirm and scream,
disappearing behind the large, flappy doors. I heard Beau sigh
next to me, examining an almond. "Poor thing was useless anyway.
Feathers were shedding like crazy. Looked like a plucked
chicken," he muttered with a few clicks of his tongue. I backed
up to the wall of my cage, sinking into an uncomfortably
position.
But that doesn't explain who I am, who my grumpy bird friend is.
Let's go further back, shall we?
My first memories are of, you guessed it, the dog cage, and
Beau.

notes: this story is a remake of a story i made a while back but
never really worked on. its inspired by maximum ride and
stranger things, including a creature that was created in a lab
and managed to escape. i'll probably spend a lot of time working
on this, and i hope to actually complete more than i normally
would.

chapter one - the bird's bribery
I don't really know anything about myself before I woke up that
strange morning. I didn't really know anything except for the
language that must've been programmed into my brain, or
something. Beau didn't know, so neither did I. I do remember,
though, that waking up was a pain. The piercing headache I had
for days would never leave my memory.
My eyes fluttered open, and it felt like my brain was thumping
against my skull as the white light blinded my eyes. I heard
voices speaking in a foreign language, and could smell the other
animals around me. Strange scents, strange noises. I felt a poke
in my side, piercing my skin, and I fell asleep.
I wasn't sure how long I was sleeping for, but I felt a bit less
pain when I woke up. The headache was still there, but it wasn't
making me feel like bashing my head against the cage wall this
time. I could see, too, without being blinded by the strong
lights of the room. And, best of all, it was quiet.
Except for the parrot.
His colorful wings were pretty when I first saw him, but as I
saw him more and more, I realized how dull it was.
