This had been a long time coming, especially since he knew he
should have made this decision months ago. His choice would also
likely be a controversial one, since the cat he had chosen had
not yet taken an apprentice on. That would be remedied as soon
as possible, however. "Everyone, gather for a meeting!"
announced Morningstar, waiting for everyone to arrive.

Snakepaw walked over to the where the meeting was being held and
sat down, feeling a little out of place. It was a bit strange
being one of the first to step up since he normally arrived at
these things late. Somehow the leader had caught him at the
right moment when he wasn't busy doing chores or wandering off
to who knows where. He waited somewhat impatiently for the
others to arrive so they could get the meeting over with.

Spiderscare approached next, having just come back from a
patrol. She dropped a rather small squirrel onto the fresh-kill
pile before settling herself next to Snakepaw. She shared a
smile with the tom before turning her head up to her brother,
awaiting for him to share whatever news he had. Maybe he would
finally promote a deputy? Or, maybe, Snakepaw would be a warrior
alongside her, despite him lagging in his training? Well, only
time would tell.
"Oof!" Waterpaw squeaked, walking right into her mentor as they
crossed her to the meeting. The small she-cat shared a shy grin
with the warrior and allowed them to lead her to everyone else.
She sat obediently, tail swishing back and forth.

Once a crowd had assembled, he began to speak. "First off, I've
made my decision for deputy, if she chooses to accept.
Spiderscare, I've always trusted you with my problems, and I
would trust you with my life. Now, I'm also trusting you with
this Clan, should I lose my lives. I would like you to be my
deputy." He had more to say, but he would need to wait for her
to accept first.

Snakepaw couldn't keep his surprise from showing when the leader
announced his decision for the new deputy. He knew that the two
of them were very close, and he didn't doubt that they had
enough trust in each other, but he had to admit that he did not
see this coming. Well, perhaps in the future, but Morningstar
probably would've chosen another deputy by then.
Spiderscare, the deputy? He couldn't bring himself to believe
it. He didn't know why, because when he thought about it, she
was a pretty good fit for deputy. The warrior was responsible,
kind, thoughtful, all things you'd want in someone who would
someday lead the clan for you. At the same time, she was still
so young and so close to his own age, it kind of scared him.
He let out a breath and kept as calm as he could, because for
some reason his heart was beating louder in his chest. He
brought his gaze over to Spiderscare and awaited her reaction,
and, fearfully, her reply. Snakepaw didn't why he felt stressed
about this. He was the reckless trouble-making apprentice who
didn't care what anyone thought or did. Except for this.

If Snakepaw was nervous, then StarClan knows Spiderscare was
terrified, speechless. Her mouth immediately went dry. She
thought maybe he would choose an older warrior, or Lightflash,
or... Oh, heavens, she didn't know who [I]exactly[/I] but she
didn't expect it to be her! The tortie gulped as eyes landed on
her. Her whiskers and ears twitched under the watchful gazes of
her Clanmates.
Could she function well as a deputy? Organize patrols, help
apprentices, help Morningstar with his duties. It seemed simple
in hindsight, considering the Clan was just about there already.
But, still, dread filled her. She took a shaky breath before
looking up at her brother, fully prepared to deny the request.
But, there it was. His confidence in his choice seemed to be
oozing from his pelt. She couldn't let him down, could she? Who
else would he choose? "I accept, Morningstar." she said, quietly
at first, before repeating it a second time with all the
confidence she could muster. "I am grateful for your faith in
me." she hummed, a small smile placing itself on her face. She
could just be... an understudy, in the very least, until someone
more worthy came along. Heavens, maybe Snakepaw could shape up
to be a fine warrior, if he stopped twiddling his paws and got
to work.
But, wait. "I haven't had an apprentice yet, Morningstar. We're
still breaking the code." she fretted, fur fluffing out and
brushing the apprentice she sat next to.

"I am hoping the ancestors will forgive me if I have you train
an apprentice as soon as possible. Therefore, the rest of
Snakepaw's training will be transferred to you, Spiderscare, if
you are both alright with that decision," Morningstar responded
to the warrior who was basically his sister. That was actually
the other point that he had had for this meeting, so it was a
good thing she had brought it up to him.

Snakepaw felt the fear rise up within the warrior sitting beside
him. Turns out they were both dreading the outcome, except he
was for selfish reasons and she was genuinely frozen with
indecision. For some reason he hadn't thought she would back out
of this, but I guess that was because he was so focused on his
own troubles. Of course she was nervous. This was a big deal,
and an even bigger burden to carry. Not only would she have so
much more responsibility as the deputy of HazeClan, but she
would have to someday take her closest friend's place as leader.
She would be the leader of HazeClan.
As much as the thought made him feel nervous, ashamed, maybe
even jealous, he also felt pride. It would be kind of cool to
have the deputy as your friend. I mean, she sort of already was,
in a way, since she was so close to Morningstar. She would be a
good deputy, and he would support her, though somewhat
grudgingly.
He let out breath of tension and continued to wait for her
anxious reply, though now he was slightly more open to the idea
of her promotion. Time seemed to be going so slow as the Clan
waited for a reply until she spoke up. She accepted the
promotion with a calm elegance she must have suddenly gathered
up. A little smile appeared on his face for a few moments,
though he wasn't sure if it was from happiness or anxiety or
gas.
Then she suddenly spoke up with a few more words of concern. Oh
yeah, the code. That's kind of why this meeting was happening in
the first place. Morningstar answered her afterwards and
suggested she take on an apprentice right away, which made
sense, he supposed. That would fix things. What he heard next
made his mouth drop open and once again left him frozen in
wide-eyed surprise. There was only thought alarming in his mind,
and it suddenly slipped out in a whisper before he could catch
it. "Holy fox-dung."
