leave me alone | character development | don't leave me alone
By: black rose Date: April 28, 2016, 7:49 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
When he awoke, he was confused. He felt... odd. Like he was
empty, vacant... hollow. This feeling was... unfamiliar, to him.
Somnus slowly opened his eyes, only to find that his vision
was... gone? No, no... it was coming back, it seemed. Slowly, he
began to be able to see, to notice that he was not where he
remembered falling asleep. A slight frown on his muzzle, he
stood to his paws, not sure what was happening. A slight sigh
escaped him as he tried to think of what might be happening.
Eventually, the shadow moved to his paws, a shiver running
through him as he felt a breeze. He didn't recognize his
surroundings, didn't recognize anything. Why... why couldn't he
       figure out where he was?
He came to a stop at the nearby river, gazing into it, and he
realized... he could barely see himself. The only part of his
reflection he could truly see were his eyes; his glowing red
eyes. A little whimper escaped him; he was afraid. Backing away,
he turned and headed towards the camp, not wanting to be out
here. As he ran, his fear only grew. He remembered, now, what
was happening to him. And he was terrified of what he knew was
to come. His heart was pounding as he headed towards the camp,
but he couldn't follow the directions that he knew were the
direction to his second home. However, he did encounter
something else. Two NPCs were there, both seemingly startled by
seeing this feline run towards them. He didn't think twice about
it; he used his power, clinging onto both of them and absorbing
their strength. He felt himself become a little bit more solid,
and immediately released his breath. This would be enough for
him to get to camp before he would lose this strength. The
battlemaster once more set out in the direction of the camp,
able to focus better and heading towards the place he was trying
to get to. He came to a stop once more as he heard a voice in
       the back of his head.
       'Hello, Somnus.'
"Shut up," he growled out loud, squeezing his eyes shut.
'What? Have I done something wrong?'
He hissed, trying to ignore the voice, forcing himself to get up
       and keep going.
'Somnus. Listen. You must get back to her. Don't you remember?
She is what keeps you linked to this world, Somnus. You are
losing your solid form. You must return to her at once, before
it gets to the point of being irreversible.'
"I don't care! I'm not going back!" he snapped, ignoring the
words that were being said to him, even though he knew that they
were right, and he was wrong. He didn't want to acknowledge it,
didn't want to admit that he couldn't survive without her. "I
don't need her. I don't need you!" The feline was getting tired
and could feel the strength of the two NPCs draining away from
       him now.
'Now you're just lying to yourself. You may not want to believe
me, but she holds you here. You say you don't need me, but you
know that I am the reason that you are here in the first place.
I am the reason you even exist, Somnus. Don't you remember?
Think back. Think of your past, of those memories you've always
kept blocked off from yourself. Remember your origins."
"NO!" He was shaking now, crouched, not able to make himself
keep going despite how much he wanted to. He wanted to get away
from the voice. He knew it was wrong, it had to be wrong. "Stop
lying to me, I know you're lying to me, you're just trying to
trick me and make me do what you want!" he rambled, as he caught
sight of an NPC who was staring at him like he was crazy. For
all that NPC knew, he could be. A growl escaped his throat and
he lunged forward, digging his claws into the other feline's
shoulders and sapping all of his strength from him, leaving him
unconscious on the ground. This gave him the chance to keep
going, allowing him to make it to the camp. Now, he only needed
to make sure he could fix this somehow. But he had no idea how.
'Don't ignore me. I am telling you the truth, but you are too
stubborn to accept it. Even when faced with the truth, you look
the other way and act. If you don't do as I've told you, you
know you will disappear. You will not be able to retain even
this form. Is that what you want?'
"Stop... Just stop..." he managed to say, forcing his eyes to
stay open, hoping nobody would have noticed what he said or how
nobody was around for him to speak to.
'I truly am sorry, Somnus. If there were any other way, I would
tell you it at once. But there is not. This is the only way to
keep you here, to keep you safe. Understand?'
"No..." he whimpered, still denying it. There was no reason for
him to do so, but if he admitted he was wrong, he'd admit that
the voice was right. If he admitted the voice was right, then he
would not be able to live with himself, knowing all of the
things it had said to him and explained to him. His eyes were
locked on his paws as he crouched there, the voice having
stopped and his tail lashing behind him. His breathing was
shallow and his heart was pounding, and he was clearly out of
breath. The battlemaster squeezed his eyes shut, trying to
ignore the headache and the breeze physically blowing through
       his noncorporeal form.
All of this had to be it's fault... right?
