Coalstar took his time and pulled his heavy weight onto the
highrock. A long sigh slipped out of his open maw. He was
finally doing it. Regret and disappointment were taking a hold
of him, but he kept on with yowl to call in the surrounding
Clan. This was for the best. He was losing his energy and
excitement to lead the Clan. Someone young and lively had to
take his place, as much as he hated the thought. AshClan was his
whole life, and he felt like his was betraying something inside
of him by making this big step. He had always imagined he would
rule until he died, but he couldn't take this anymore. This
empty living from day to day, accomplishing nothing, something
had to change.

Decembersnow peaked over at her mate as he called out to the
Clan, ears flattened against her head. She thought back to how
lively he once was about the Clan. The pride and excitement he
held. But now... he didn't exactly look the same. He seemed like
he was leading a burden, not a Clan. The pure white she-cat
slowly walked over to the forming group. She was tempted to hop
up and sit beside him for support or comfort, whatever reason.
But she resisted. She didn't want to mess up whatever he was
doing.
Winterpaw watched from the Nursery, subconsciously guarding
those inside of it. Those meaning her kits. She realized that
she would have to be an example for them, even if it hurts to be
confident. She was happy that Sandypaw was able to give her
chances and teach her to act strong. It definitely made her feel
a bit bigger, despite her insecurities. She payed attention to
her father, giving a slight yawn.
Sandypaw sat beside Winterpaw, her tail resting loosely on the
she-cat's. Sure, she was real good friends with her. But...
every time she thought about it, she found that she liked
Winnie. As in, like-like. But, how could she love an apprentice
queen? Plus, the queen probably didn't even like her back. It
was sad, but true.

Coalstar caught sight of Decembersnow in the crowd, but looked
away. He couldn't help but feel ashamed of himself as well, like
he let her down. She had left her beloved Clan to stay with him,
the leader who couldn't leave his work. Now what was it all for?
He was just giving it all away.
No, there was no turning back now. The dark gray tabby seated
himself and began. "Now I don't like sappy speeches, so I'm
gonna make this short and sweet. I'm not the leader I used to
be. Everyday I'm getting older and look where I got us. In order
to help our growth, and myself, I'm stepping from my position as
leader." He paused for a few still moments to let the news sink
in, and he kept his stare cold and calm. He wasn't finished yet.

Dancingdead glanced at Jake with a smile as a greeting, since
she couldn't speak. Then she looked up as Coalstar began to
speak. When he finished, she was, first off, shocked. Then she
was upset. Coalstar had been a good leader for them for a long
time, and it was sad to lose him as their leader now. But, she
agreed with him that their Clan wasn't moving forward much.
Keeping herself quiet, she waited, as she could see he intended
to keep speaking.
