Winterpaw anxiously watched her children sleep, every few
moments checking their breathing and their hearts. She was
worried for them - scared, even. She didn't know how'd they grow
up. The future was unclear to her, and she didn't like it.

Coalstar walked into the nursery, his usual strong steps were
growing, well, more heavy than usual. He was starting to feel
old, and he didn't like it one bit. Even if he wasn't "elder"
age yet, boredom made his bones ache. As the leader stepped into
the den, his heart rose and sank when he saw his daughter
nervously supervising her dreaming offspring. It really, really,
pained him to see his own beautiful Winterpaw with her own
litter of kittens, and he barely knew her or the story behind
the little rascals. He felt like a failure as a father, and
maybe even as a mate. Scratch that. He was a failure. He finally
had a chance to raise a family and he blew it.
Coalstar gazed at his grandchildren for a few long moments,
wondering what he could say that wouldn't be awkward, offensive,
or depressing. This young female had enough to worry about, not
to mention her anxiety problem, but he was here anyway.
"They're not sick, are they?" he murmured, wondering why this
queen wouldn't let them out of her sight.

"What?" Winterpaw squeaked, looking up at her father. She was
startled, to say the least. When she realized who he was, she
let out a breath that she seemed to hold in. "You scared me,
Daddy." She murmured, frowning just a little. "No... it's
just... I'm worried for them." She tried explaining, kneading
her nest nervously. She took a deep breath and let it out.
"Daddy? When my siblings and I were born, what did you feel?
Were you proud? Or were you scared?" She asked, chosing her
words carefully. She didn't want to tick him off. Father or not,
Coalstar was the leader. He could do what he wanted.

Coalstar flattened his ears a little when he realized he had
startled her. "My bad," he breathed, a small embarrassed smile
quickly appearing and disappearing from his face.
The AshClan leader sat down and thought about her question
carefully. He knew he was proud of his kittens. He had always
been proud of them, no matter what. They were his and Deccy's
children. Then the memories came flooding back. Decembersnow was
screaming furiously at Springthaw while protectively pulling her
newborns close to herself. He was scared for them as well, he
realized. "I've always been proud of you...But yes, I'll admit I
was a little scared too. I think it's safe to say that all
parents have felt that way before." he answered finally.

Winterpaw nodded slowly, wondering if Ticktockpaw would be
proud. Sure, she knew he was dead/missing and this was all an
accident, but she was curious as to what he actually felt
towards his kits. He couldn't hate them that much in the after
life, could he? Mentally shaking her head, she sighed. "I feel
more scared then anything. Anything could happen at any moment.
They could get sick, or an attack could happen. I could look
away for a moment and one of my kits will be missing, or
hurting."
She shivered slightly at the thought. This was how Winterpaw was
- think of all the worse scenarios so when something good comes
along, she could feel good about it. "I'm sorry about that,
Daddy. I'm pretty sure you have better children to waste time
with." She breathed out a short laugh.

"Your kits are in as much danger as everyone else. Worrying
about the future is not going to stop anything bad from
happening, because good and bad things will happen whether you
want it to or not."
Coalstar smiled. "And nobody is 'better' than you, Winterpaw. My
children are never a waste of my time," he meowed, honestly.
Besides, if he ever favored any of kits, it would probably be
Winterpaw. She reminded him of Decembersnow, who he really
needed to again. He felt like their relationship was falling
apart, once again.

Winterpaw actually managed a genuine smile. Not a scared one,
not a forced one, but one that had come to her naturally. "I
guess you're right there... I just can't help but worry, though.
Being a single mother isn't exactly... the best thing ever." She
chuckled slightly, reminding herself that for a majority of her
life, her parents were apart and considered single. Bah.
"Awh. You're to nice, Daddy." She added, not wanting to continue
with her true thoughts on how Echoingpaw would probably become a
warrior first due to... well, Winnie's pregnancy.
