well. flippaw was done being fat. she had been resting in the
nursery when she started giving bireth.

it was over. purring, she wrapped her tail around her six kits -
she did not yet know only two survived. "bluepaw ~"

Mazey came in and dropped a borage leaf, and smiled warmly at
the kittens. "Congrats. .." She whispered,nOt wanting to
startle them.

seeing the smile on the mca's maw faulter, she frowned. "what's
wrong?"
glitterglue padded over, inspected the kits, then frowned.
"flippaw . . . only two survived."
and tears flowed down flippaw's face. "wh-what?"

to change this." Gently, she tried to take the dead ones away.

closer to her. "no! they can't be dead!"

for once, bluepaw actually found himself rushing around. his
legs were stiff, not only from fear, but from lack of exercise
as well. he had heard the screams. his kits were being born and
he was missing it!
as he rushed into the medicine cat, his faded blue eyes were
wide with worry and hope. his heart stopped when he noticed the
looks on their faces...no one was smiling, or giving out
congratulations. no one was saying how beautiful her kittens
were. nothing. his mouth opened to ask what happened, but
nothing came out as he was too scared to hear the response.

Stygianpaw backed away and walked over to Bluepaw, then just
dipped her head in apology, though it wasn't her fault. She
still felt terrible.

she lifted her head, meeting her crush's gaze. "they . . . only
two survived, bluepaw," she whispered, looking at him. she
wanted comfort from him. "but look at the two that did survive!
so strong and healthy . . . what do you want to name them?"
