to the leader, the pariah, the victor, the messiah, THIS IS WAR

Emptypromises had been alone in the forest of the Seven Stones,
letting the news Phoenixfeather had given to him sink in. He was
going to be a father. There couldn't be a worse time for this to
have happened. Sitting quietly, his eyes were closed. When he
moved to roll onto his back, he pressed on his broken paw and
winced, shifting to stop it from hurting.

Alone time. She'd had a lot of it lately. Streamflow loved the
company of others, but hated crowds, and chose to stay away from
the large amount of cats at the Seven Stones. The longer she
spent by herself, the more the medic thought about stuff. And
the more she did that, the more depressed she became. As she
smelled a familiar scent near to her, Streamflow felt a bit of
relief. If she could just talk to someone, she would feel loads
better. The silver tabby walked over to Emptypromises and mewed
a quick hello, sitting down a couple of tail lengths away from
       the tabby tom.

Hearing her greeting, the tom switched to a sitting position,
mewing a return hello. Standing up, he limped towards her,
sitting beside her. Emptypromises sighed, letting himself lay
down again and lay his head on his paws.

"Is your paw any better?" she asked. Poor dude. She'd never had
any broken bones before, but she imagined it must hurt a lot.

He hesitated before answering, "A bit, but it still hurts a lot
when I try to put pressure on it." Eppy shifted, moving his head
       away from his hurt ankle.

"That's pretty normal," Stream mewed. "It'll feel better
eventually." She looked away from Eppy and stared off into
space, but deciding that would result in an awkward silence and
therefore the death of a cow, she turned back to him and tried
to think of something to talk about. "..So what are you doing
       here?"

He hesitated before replying honestly, "Thinking about what
       Phoenixfeather told me."

He hesitated, wondering if he should tell Streamflow before
telling her, "She told me I'm going to be a father."

"Oh. That's great. Aren't you happy?" He seemed a little down in
the dumps; shouldn't he be happy for his mate? Streamflow tried
to ignore the pain welling up inside of her, holding back
       painfully something in her throat.
