Hi, everyone! BrEeZy here with my
first story written on here ^_^
Like it's said in the title, comments, critique, etc. etc.
welcome!
(This is a story I actually started awhile ago ^_^)
(I re-posted this one this site, because 1: It keeps getting
pushed down, and 2: I actually want people to read this X3)
Current Rating: PG (for swearing mostly)
~Chapter One~
~Warm Greetings~

I trudged after
Vance who in turn just glanced behind his shoulder and grunted.
I shrugged and just walked after him, the dry forest leaves
scuffing as I walked along the dirt path. Honestly, I didn’t
really want to be here, after all it had been his idea to go
find Zerlinda, I had nothing to do with it. But unfortunately I
had to follow my mentor.
To describe Vance is pretty easy…After all, all of us are given
a name that reflects our personality or has something to do with
it…Vance has told me about a hundred times what his means (also
with a proud edge to his voice) And also he explained it very
slow as if I was a two year old trying to figure out what
antibiotics mean. Anyways, since he drilled it into my head, his
name means…a large and voracious shark (Alopias vulpes),
remarkable for the great length of the upper lobe of its tail,
with which it beats, or thrashes, its prey. It is found both
upon the American and the European coasts. Called also fox
shark, sea ape, sea fox, slasher, swingle-tail, and thrasher
shark…Or it can just mean a person who threshes. Either one is
fine. Either one fits him.
Ok, and for Zerlinda, I wasn’t too happy to go see her…See,
Vance and Zerlinda have sort of a shady past and well, let’s
just say they absolutely can’t stand each other. At all. Her
name means beautiful dawn, and given the fact that I’ve never
seen her, I’ve just assumed that she’s as beautiful as
dawn…Whatever that means.
So basically, I was traveling with a voracious shark off to go
find a beautiful woman, and they both hate each other. Great.
A delicious scent wafted through the thick brambles that were
ahead of us and I knew that we had reached The Tavern. Zerlinda
owned this little tavern place and it offered a place to stay,
food, and well a pub. For a price of course. It was a safe haven
for travelers and also just people who are too lazy to work and
would rather get drunk during the long hours of these summer
days.
Vance glanced at me, and his extremely pale brown eyes studied
me for a second, he did that a lot…And as usual I just looked
back at him. Vance cocked an eyebrow and said gruffly,
“Don’t screw anything up or well…I’ll kill you.”
I hear that every day.
“Sure…No problem.” I replied dryly and we both forced ourselves
through the thorny bush, where tiny little thorns pricked
through my thin shirt, and I wished not for the first time that
I had a stupid coat. It was a bit harder, given the fact that it
was dark out, and the moon was covered by more than one cloud…
Vance just pushed himself through without a visible problem, and
he practically yanked me out of the bush, an impatient look on
his face and he muttered under his breath,
“This is going to be a long journey, seeing that I have to drag
your ass out of every bush, or trap you get caught in.”
I returned his words with a glare. After brushing myself off and
pulling out a little thorn that he embedded itself into my cheek
I looked up and spotted the Tavern…It was actually pretty decent
looking, and looked more inviting then I had thought. Fresh
smoke was rising from the warm chimney, the scent of food flew
out of ever open window that seemed to be spotless, and the
Tavern’s wooden walls seemed to be sturdy and well-built. The
candlelight flickered in the windows, and I could see the
movement of many men and woman shambling about. It was fairly
large, a three story building and I practically ran over to the
door, until Vance firmly held my collar, causing me to choke
briefly.
“What! Just this once can you not almost kill me?” I spluttered,
my green eyes narrowing with obvious annoyance.
Vance just stared down at me and his brow furrowed.
“That’s not much fun is it?” He replied before adding, “Now stop
complaining and let’s go in…This is going to be a hell of a lot
worse for me then it will be for you.” And with that he
basically shoved me away and forcefully opened the door. Looking
past him I spotted every single eye turn onto Vance, some
smiled, some frowned, and some just looked too drunk to even
comprehend who he was. But those who did rose from their seats
and started choking out,
“Vance! Look!”
“Hey Zerlinda look who’s here!”
“By the lords! It’s Vance!”
“Who’s that weird boy with him?”
“I don’t know but he’s kind of cute.”
“Cute, or come on! That boy looks like he could be Gregor’s
son!”
“Gregor! Ha!”
“It’s Vance!”
It was all a bit overwhelming, but nothing seemed to faze Vance
and he just calmly strolled up to the bar and placed his hand on
the bar’s surface and knocked three times before he said,
“Shut up will yah?” Before he looked up as the door to the
kitchen swung open and there she was.
She just kind of stood there with an air about her, and her head
titled upwards like she was seriously going to do some damage.
Her face had a rough beauty to it, and her light blue eyes
flashed with anger…She stalked up to Vance and leaned over the
bar, her lips pursed slightly. Zerlinda, I knew it was her; just
by the way she carried herself, and her looks…Beautiful dawn.
“Where’s Zerlinda?” Vance asked gruffly, and he narrowed his
eyes at the young women.
OK, it wasn’t Zerlinda, and maybe I was just a complete idiot
but the way Vance had described her kind of fit this woman…But
then again she looked to be about eighteen, my age, and given
the fact that Vance and Zelinda had been married…Yep, I was an
idiot.
“I don’t think she wants to see you…Unlike your little drunk
buddies, she has common sense to keep her distance away from an
overgrown child.” She responded curtly, and Vance stiffened and
his eyes locked with hers, and his hand hovered over his blade
at his belt but before he could make a move, in a flash the
young woman’s knife was in between his fingers, and struck hard
down into the wooden bar and she said quietly,
“I don’t think you want to do that…Hmm?”
I knew Vance could probably tear this girl from limb to limb if
he wanted to but surprisingly he just let out a rusty laugh, and
chuckled before he responded,
“It’s been awhile Kaie.”
Kaie, so that was her name…I ignored the hostile glares that
were thrown my way and I went up to Vance’s side, studying the
girl. She didn’t take her eyes off of Vance before she asked,
“Who’s the boy? Let me guess…You’re son?”
Son! She honestly thought that I looked like gruff Vance? I
wasn’t anything like him! I could hardly stand sitting next to
him, let alone being like him.
I cleared my throat and was about to respond but Vance gave me a
sharp glanced but I ignored it.
“I’m not his son, I am Aleixo.” I said and the girl’s gaze
turned away from Vance to me, and she narrowed her eyes.
“I am simply his apprentice…Looking for travels, and
adventurous, you honestly thought that I was his son?” I added,
secretly hoping that it would help me out.
Kaie swiftly yanked the knife out of the bar’s table and I
froze, for one moment thinking that for sure she was going to
chuck it straight at my head but instead she flipped it around
once between her fingers and clipped it back into her belt.
“Well. At least you hate him…That makes up for all of…Well,
you.” She replied and motioned towards me before she gracefully
turned and walked back towards the kitchen door. Eyes stared
after her, like hungry wolves, and she closed the door rather
harshly and we were all left in a chilly, awkward silence.
“Well, well.” Vance said, breaking the silence, “Isn’t she a
pleasure to be around?”
Some uneasy murmurs of agreement rose up from the crowd, and
Vance then slammed down a pack of gold, and it spilled all over
the bar, and he announced rather oddly cheerfully,
“Rounds for everyone.”
A slight smile formed at my lips and for just a moment I felt
rather pleased with my little performance…Until Vance slowly
turned to me and gave a wide smile but his eyes were sparkling,
and I knew that we would have a nice little talk latter. Yay.
“Vance.” An extremely silky voice echoed around the room, and
the crowd of bustling men, quitted down, and stopped pushing for
a free round that Vance had offered. This time for sure, I knew
it was Zerlinda.
Like Kaie she had an air about her, but it wasn’t exactly the
‘leave me alone or I will kill you’ it was more like, ‘I will
kill you only if you upset me’ type of air. I leaned past a
fairly bulky man, and spotted her…Her face was as pale as white
rice, and her calm amber eyes flared up only slightly when she
saw Vance who gave her the same cold look. She was wearing a
simple barmaid dress, but it sure seemed to fit around her thin
waist. She was tall, about as tall as Vance (Which is really
tall) and lanky. She crossed over the wooden planks and they
creaked quietly as she walked.
Vance just roughly moved me out of the way and I stumbled but
was able to keep my footing, and I gripped onto some of my
dignity and shuffled my way over to the fat man, and observed
from a distance.
“Zerlinda.” Vance said, and they met each other in the center of
the room, and a frosty silence greeted us after his words.
“Come on, we should talk somewhere else.” Zerlinda finally said
and she turned and hurriedly made her way upstairs, her slippers
making no noise on the oak steps.
“Stay here.” Vance told me and he followed after her, giving me
a fiery glanced over his shoulder, as if just to make his point.
