"Is it a boy or girl?" she asked, deciding to fill the silence
with simple question. She rolled her shoulders uncomfortably,
her wet shirt getting to her.

Evan answered, "Boy." He handed her the wolf before it began to
gnaw on his broken finger.

She squeaked, holding it carefully in her arms so it wouldn't
get hurt. She looked up at Evan and smiled, nudging his
shoulder. "If the mama wolf doesn't come by for her pup, can we
keep him?" she asked. The short female wanted the
animal-expert's advice.

He thought about it and would have smiled. But he said quietly,
"She's dead. That was where the barks came from. The pup would
have died had we not gotten there in time." Evan then said, "So
yeah, we can keep it."

Pheo passed the pup back to Evan, wiping her tears away and
taking off her sweater. She spread the sweater out on her desk.
"Just put him on my sweater." she ordered, choking on a sob. She
started looking through her backpack for things.

He saw how said she looked a hesitated. But he put the pup on
her sweater. "Maybe you should go change so you don't get
sick... I'll watch him."
