A dreadful piece of officiating by Kevin Friend I think. Wrong
to caution Grealish for simulation in my view and he would have
been well advised to wait until the end of the passage of play
so that if the ball went in (which it did) then VAR could at
least come in and bail him out by awarding the goal.

I can understand why the VAR can’t award the goal as Friend’s
whistle stopped the ball from being in play. However, surely VAR
can overturn the simulation decision and award a penalty for the
foul? If it can’t do that, what is the point of it!?!?

VAR could if deeming it to be a clear and obvious error not to
award a penalty but I'm not sure that it was, certainly not in
view of the standard that has been applied so far.
It would certainly have felt the right outcome 'morally', at the
very least.

The only problem is, Readingfan, the depths of my imagination
can’t picture any situation that will be deemed clear and
obvious after the numerous examples that have so far failed to
meet the threshold!

I like Kevin Friend as a referee and a person but one cannot
defend the indefensible. It was a shockingly bad piece of
refereeing; too hasty and plainly wrong. Villa have every right
to feel aggrieved. I have no doubt that Kevin Friend
acknowledges his gross error and will be very sorry for it.
Let's hope he, and others, learn by it.
VAR is rather failing to convince me. I agree with the
correspondents above. The threshhold for 'clear and obvious'
appears to have set so high that it make the whole system
redundant.

I am afraid my support for VAR is beginning to wane too. Surely
the whole purpose is to correct the errors such as that made by
Kevin Friend yesterday and if it can't (or doesn't) do that,
what is the point of it? As in most things devised by the
football hierarchy, it is much too complicated and governed by
rigid application and instead of simplifying matters, just
leaves many of us mystified.
The game we all love is essentially simple. Why does it always
have to be made more and more complicated?

It occurs to me that there have been quite a few cautions for
simulation in the first month or so of the new PL season - some
correct, some incorrect - and I'd suggest this has been an
increase on the average in recent years. Perhaps this is
something that referees have been asked to clamp down,
especially as in some instances VAR can help them out if the
decision is wrong.
Referees need to learn though to delay their whistle when
relevant so that VAR can come in if they screw up.
On a general note, whilst I agree that VAR has hitherto missed
some obvious offences (whether because the threshold has been
set too high or just poor decision-making by the relevant VARs,
I don't know), I will admit that there is a certain part of me
that is glad it now seems more difficult to get a penalty than
previously and not all minor contact is being penalised because
it was increasingly reaching the stage a few years ago where
goals seemed to be routinely coming from a player significantly
exaggerating slight and negligible contact from a defender and a
penalty being awarded.

Like Readingfan I don't like to see penalties awarded for
minimal contact incidents. That said, having watched Goals on
Sunday this morning and seen the highlights from the West Ham v
Norwich game, it seemed to me that for the second successive
Saturday, Paul Tierney failed to give what many would consider
pretty straightforward penalty decisions. Needless to say, VAR
did not seek to intervene and overrule in either case.
I just don't understand how that is increasing the accuracy of
decision making in those situations which I thought was one of
the intentions of VAR.

Forget about VAR, the only way you'll stop decisions like this
is to scrap the SG levels and go back to an equal playing field
for all Level 1 referees. There's a number of elite level
referees regularly making these kind of decisions but they have
protected SG status so is at any wonder we keep seeing this type
of lazy refereeing? If you bring in the same level of
competition that appears in the rest of the refereeing pyramid,
standards would raise overnight because failure would be
rewarded by demotion.
