So Neil Hair & Co have a free Saturday with the demise of Bury
FC. Latest news suggests that Bolton's game at Gills will be
going ahead, but I cannot help thinking that if the present
situation continues, teams who are playing Bolton in the near
future will be looking forward to boosting their goal
difference, which can't be good for the game.

If (and I sincerely hope this doesn't happen) Bolton are kicked
out like Bury, am I correct in stating that all the points and
goal difference figures for the teams who've played Bolton are
wiped off the tables?

I assume that it will be similar for when Aldershot went the
same way during a season, their results were 'expunged' from the
record.

So if you make a mess of your driving test first time round you
shouldn't be allowed a second chance?
Thankfully Bolton seemed to have been saved from the same fate
as Bury but why does there have to be one less relegation spot
and not one extra promotion down the line? Why reward failure
rather than success. And if that seems to contradict my
statement above teams have 46 chances to get things right rather
than the one Mr Smith has had.

Poor analogy. His driving test was his promotion - he's now on
the road driving.
If a new driver has a crash or offends against motoring law, he
might be off the road for some while.
He probably wasn't as bad as suggested. My only beef with him
over recent years was his calling off a perfectly playable pitch
at Concord (perhaps he liked Canvey so much he wanted to return)
and then refereeing Dartford to a conclusion in an absolute
quagmire a few weeks later.

No I was not but.. It is far from uncommon for a referee to
recieve a 4o appointment or a weekend off following a poor
performance. I must emphasise how much he struggled, to the
point plenty around me feeling sorry because he was so out of
his depth. As I said, I wish him the best of luck and I hope he
proves it was very much a case of first match nerves.
