Ollie Yates (Colchester Utd v Northampton Town)

       ---------------------------------------------------------
I was at Colchester United v Northampton Town today as a
neutral, with a friend who supports The Us. I was intrigued to
see Ollie Yates. Prior to this, I had not seen him referee live.
And I was really impressed with Mr Yates. He reminded me of a
young (I assume?) Michael Oliver - both in appearance but more
so in style and genuine quality really.
He seemed to build a good rapport with the players - despite
looking significantly younger than most! His foul detection was
spot on - I especially liked the way he read aerial tussles
between strikers and central defenders. Both teams had at least
one tall target man who would back in to the centre half just as
much as the centre half may be pushing in the back. So often
these result in free kicks one way or the other (often in the
attacking favour) but, most of time here, Mr Yates gave nothing
       - rightly I believe. He was consistent with most infringements
       too.
The solitary goal came from the penalty spot for Colchester. It
looked right to me - it was at our end. Mr Yates was well-placed
to see a tug on the striker just as he shaped to shoot. There
were no complaints from any Town players, which tells a story.
Two players were booked - and these both seemed right too. Lines
caught Senior late for his, Senior did well to dummy it but it
was still reckless. Shortly afterwards, Bunney absolutely
clattered Senior in a dangerous area and was rightly booked as a
       result.
If he maintains this form, I believe Mr Yates will be an SG2
referee next season. He was excellent.

Good to see Ollie being mentioned and doing well. I think he
might have had a prolonged absence from the field due to injury.

Was you at a different game to me?
Lines missed the player who vaulted the challenge, although it
was still worthy of a caution.
Bunney didn't 'clatter' Senior, he pulled him back by his shirt,
when he was in the corner area. Caution was correct though.
The penalty was a trip, not 'a tug'!
Not impressed at all by Mr Yates, very inconsistent with his
application of the Law towards both sides. He was consistent in
one area, giving obvious throw ins and corners/goal kicks
incorrectly, invariably over ruling the Assistant in front of us
       a number of times.
The 'you don't know what you are doing' was coming from both
       sets of supporters.

Most of those fans probably haven’t got a clue about anything
particularly the LOTG!! And aren’t always right either!

Not probably, however he was giving them a good opportunity to
       believe that they were right...
