I see from another site that the Chinese referee involved in the
VAR penalty incident with Craig Pawson, has been given another
game tomorrow. Craig Pawson has been appointed three times since
the Angola/New Zealand game, but they have all been as an
assistant VAR.
Does that mean FIFA has backed the referee in the original no
penalty decision? If so that’s ridiculous.
[/quote]
It seems as if Craig has been punished, indeed.

But he is there as one of 17, I think it was, Video Assistant
Referees, so was never going to be appointed to an onfield role.

Without knowing the ins and outs of the FIFA mechanism, and
perhaps taking more a common sense approach I've got a slightly
different thought.
Though in my opinion the referee was incorrect in his decision,
would sending him home be the best course of action? To get to
this level FIFA have obviously seen him as a ref with potential,
and potentially he may not use VAR on a regular basis (apologies
not sure of his full background).
Though there may be high prestige to winning, I've always seen
the under age tournaments as a training ground for both players
and officials, so I think getting one (admittedly KMI) wrong in
a first game to be should't prevent being appointed to a second,
it may well beanother game at this level with VAR may assist the
referee's development. If they send him home on the back of one
mistake, then potentially he could still be the best option for
next summer's Under 19 or under 20 tournaments and will still
have just have the one game with a bad outcome in his mind.

On JCFC’s point, I agree that Craig was not going to get an
onfield appointment but rather that where he was appointed the
main VAR for his first match, the following 3 were as assistant
VAR. This certainly seems to be, as Vlad put it, a sort of
punishment by FIFA for something they think he did wrongly.

After the earlier discussion good to see Craig Pawson back with
a main VAR appointment! I see he is working with Drew Fisher for
the third time who I think is a very experienced VAR official.
