I did it for 18 years (made it to the Contrib) - but ended up
quitting due to the abuse on Sunday mornings and lack of support
from those higher up.

Sadly, you are not the only one who has suffered in this way. I
notice that one of our local Sunday morning leagues is short of
officials and we are only two weeks into the season. The league,
which a few years ago had over 40 teams, is now down to 15 teams
and struggling for officials.
Having said that, the American Football scene is increasing in

Last day of the season for me today until the end of September -
I’ve got the Under 19s Southern Area Finals up at Stourbridge.
Then I can relax and rest up!

It is interesting Ashington46 what you say about your local
Sunday League - here in the Salisbury area in 'the Salisbury and
District League ' on Saturdays at one stage there were 7
Divisions all with at least 12 teams in each one and now they
are struggling to keep just one going - I wonder why there is
this decline in local football - is it lack of interest , plenty
of other things to do ,too expensive ? - and of course this is
having an effect on recruiting of referees as there are less
matches for them too learn the trade - I refereed for several
years at this level and thoroughly enjoyed the experience,by and
large, of visiting all the small village teams that were in the
League and made many friends in doing so ( and some enemies,
particularly when turning up at some grounds with the comment
'Oh no not you again)- --happy days never it seems destined to
return

I am originally from Lancashire, however, I have been based in
Northumberland for well over 30 years and as my name suggests I
am based in Ashington.
The decline in local football up here is very similar to what
has happened in Salisbury with many Leagues folding, both on
Saturday and Sunday, because of a lack of players but also a
lack of money.
I suppose that we shouldn't be hijacking a thread about the FA
Cup, however, if the trend continues it will affect the number
of clubs entering the competition.
One of the big problems up here has been the closure of many
working mens' clubs and pubs which all used to have teams. In
addition, many of these clubs had been run by people who had
done the job for years and as they retired there was a distinct
lack of younger lads willing to take on the running of a team.
Also, the price of hiring pitches has increased by a lot,
however, the facilities have not improved significantly because
the money is channeled into other areas..
As you have said, this has a knock on effect for young referees
because they used to get experience from the local leagues.
Having seen both Mark Clattenberg and Michael Oliver come
through this system we know that it can be extremely helpful in
their development.
Just what the answer is, I do not know, however, the senior
league, outside the pyramid system, which is thriving the most
in the north east is the over 40s league which plays matches on
Saturday morning and can involve teams travelling round trips of
over 100 miles to fulfil a league fixture.
