FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round
Bexhill United 1 v 6 Eastbourne Town
Nick Blogg (Horsham); David Barnard, Rajab Seruwagi.
Bexhill's ground being out of action for the moment,, the match
was played in the shadow of Eastbourne Town Hall, with its
imposing clock tower. The officials were a motley bunch: of the
two smallish assistants, AR2 was of a middling vintage and
appeared to have a shaven head, an option no longer available to
AR1 , who had spent decades maturing in the cellar. In such
company Mr Blogg was the Beaujolais nouveau, though beau would
not be the French adjective to spring to mind. With a very thin
and gangling appearance, he did not immediately look a natural
as a referee - but appearances can be deceptive.
Unfancied Bexhill made a good start with a couple of dangerous
raids and took the lead on 8 minutes from a free-kick. It took
just three minutes for Eastbourne to draw level,, assisted by
what looked a poor effort by the Bexhill keeper. He did better
with two good blocks in the next few minutes, but Eastbourne
added a further three goals in quick succession either side of
the half hour.
Mr Barnard got the second half off to a good start, performing a
graceful if involuntary somersault as he arrived to check his
net. Again Bexhill started well, but Eastbourne soon took
control, adding two further goals.
It was not the most demanding of games for Mr Blogg, requiring
just three brief warnings. His initial appearance may not have
been too promising, but what he had to do, he did well. He used
advantage most effectively and kept his whistling at an
appropriate level. No cards were needed and Mr Blogg put in just
the sort of performance that this match required. One can ask
for little more.

Having viewed with a measure of disdain some Southern folks'
uncertainty as to the whereabouts of places in the North, I must
confess that until the last few days I would have been hard
pressed to pinpoint the venue for Saturday's match. The journey
there allowed Redhill railway station - I'm too old to say
"train station" - to be added to the previously established
list of Stockport, King's Cross, Haymarket and Cardiff. From
there the 100 bus delivered me to

FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round
Horley Town 2 v 2 Bearsted
Jamie Wells (Brighton?); Steven Walker, Christopher Porter.
Having arrived ridiculously early, JCFC was ensconced in the bar
to witness the officials' arrival. The dress code appeared more
relaxed than would pass muster in Yorkshire. The tall,
well-built young man, whose five o'clock shadow was three hours
premature, wore a brown jumper - and a permanent grin, which
suggested that here was either the village idiot or a very nice
chap. His subsequent work as referee ruled out the former and
tended to confirm the latter. It is not known which assistant
was which. AR2 with the boffin-like very high forehead seemed a
talkative soul. He too had a fixed smile, tempered by a
surprised expression, which occasionally had the misfortune to
call to mind a.warmongering former Prime Minister. His blazer
was smart, the effect spoiled only by the loose schoolboy knot
of his tie. AR1, had a blouson rather then a jacket and with the
wisdom of his greying hair kept his back firmly to JCFC. Their
onfield attire was equally varied, the referee earning Brownie
points for long sleeves, but losing them as his shirt seemed to
be charcoal rather than black. The warm-up met with approval,
being one of the least energetic seen.
Mr Wells had a decision to make in the first minute as a
Bearsted attacker fell over the keeper's arms but his wave away
of penalty claims looked justified. The visitors had a shot
cleared off the line soon afterwards. There followed some
entertaining stuff, with particularly nice touches from Horley.
It was Bearsted though that went ahead from a 30th minus corner.
The yellow card (from the side it looked green) was correctly
shown to the home number 2 for a challenge from behind. On 41
minutes a high ball across the area was handled by a Horley
defender, but Mr Wells was quick to award a free-kick for a push
by the attacker - a verdict not contested. Immediately Horley
moved the ball smartly to the other end and equalised.
Early in the second half supporters impressed with their
knowledge of the law when a pass struck Mr Wells and he
surprisingly allowed play to continue for several seconds before
remembering to whistle and bringing the ball back forty yards.
As the hour mark approached, a Horley defender was dispossessed
and Bearsted ran through to score, but parity was restored two
minutes later after a couple of ricochets at the other end. It
took a further clearance off the line to keep the visitors
level. A couple of spats crept in with Mr Wells settling -
leniently perhaps - for a word. Bearsted did pick up two late
yellows for attack-stoppers, but their number 4 was not
penalised for what seemed a clear forearm lead to the back of an
opponent's neck.
In very windy conditions it had been an enjoyable spectacle, for
which all three teams deserve credit. There were several injury
stoppages, but otherwise Mr Wells looked to keep things moving,
avoiding unnecessary offside calls. He is not the most graceful
of movers- more carthorse than racing thoroughbred - but like a
carthorse he did a useful job and his personality seemed to go
down well with the players.

Sunday 11th August 2019
FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round
Barkingside 4 v 1 Stansted
(Possibly) Liam Giles (Romford); Anonymous and Equally Anonymous
No concessions were available, the bar was out of bounds and the
programme declared that the officials were not known at the time
of printing, so clearly not the originally appointed trio. Given
the publicity awarded in recent years to the demise of the name
Gary, the youthful appearance of the fair-haired referee
appeared to confirm this. He was in best bib and tucker as they
strolled round the pitch beforehand and it must be assumed that
the two shirt-sleeved assistants had merely left their jackets
inside. AR1 was probably younger than he looked; AR2 surely even
older than he looked in civvies. As a result when the warm-up
began, referee and AR1 set off on a lap of the field, leaving
AR2 tottering in their wake for almost 30 yards, at which point
he turned round, trotted back 60 yards to meet his colleagues in
the corner as the ended their lap.
The programme declared that a win for Barkingside would be the
shock of the round and they hit the post with a shot on five
minutes, only to lift the rebound woefully over the bar. Perhaps
that was what the editor had in mind. The home side continued to
look the better of the two, but on 19 minutes an idiotic looped
throw by a defender near the corner flag put his colleague under
pressure and Stansted picked up the half clearance to send the
ball into the top corner from some 30 yards. Barkingside could
have drawn level within a minute, but put the shot wide of the
post. They had an unmissable chance on 43 minutes, but their
number 16 somehow blasted the ball over the crossbar before
sinking to his knees in shame.
During the break a much-travelled gentleman regaled the world
with details of the previous day's cup-tie at Leicester Nirvana,
when there had been a sin-binning, which one would not have
thought correct in the FA Cup.
The start of the second half was delayed by three minutes while
repairs were effected to the net - just as well, maybe, since it
was tested within a minute as Barkingside equalised. The next
seven minutes brought them two further goals, one a speculative
effort in off the far post, the other a header from a corner.
The home number 12 and his captain were called for a warning on
81 minutes, but it fell on stony ground and he was cautioned
five minutes later. Barkingside added their fourth on 89 minutes
to complete what did not appear to an outsider "the shock of the
round."
The referee had a largely trouble-free afternoon and his
assistants did their job well enough, despite AR2's limited
pace. Mr Giles, if he indeed it was, looked confident in his
manner, both before and during the game, and there was plenty of
smiling chat (sadly inaudible thanks to the athletics track)
during the match. Possibly a young man to watch - but a sterner
test than this would be needed to be sure.

FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round Replay
Garforth Town 3 v 2 Shildon
Lee Hible (Stocksbridge); unlisted, but JCFC would stake 5p each
on Tony Murphy and Gavin Hock.
Having watched Mr Hible wrestle with a horrible match at
Brighouse last season, JCFC hoped that this match would be as
trouble-free as the three Cup ties seen over the weekend. Alas,
with a replay between two combative teams this hope was not to
be realised.
Mr Hible's S&H badge must have had forebodings, as it tried to
escape even before entering the field, but Mr Hible recovered
it, patted it back into place, where surprisingly it remained
throughout. Never having met Mr Hible, I have still formed the
impression that he is a very agreeable chap, keen to see the
best in people - which may not always be advisable in the case
of footballers, who are not always known to be 100% trustworthy.
A sloppy Shildon pass on 2 minutes set up a Garforth attack
which ended with a shot against the post. A knock to the head of
a Garforth player ended his game and Mr Hible's explanation that
the opponent's arms were high but nothing more was reasonable -
though a couple of further forearm leads by the Shildon number 8
could possibly have been penalised. Shildon looked strong and
the Garforth keeper soon made the first of what was to be many
good saves. On 15 minutes Garforth were correctly penalised for
a foul and while the offender was being lectured, they moved the
ball to a position vastly more favourable to a shot and got away
with it. Fortunately the shot ended in the side netting. There
were to be two similar, if less blatant, examples later in the
game, again not picked up. On 17 minutes an uncontrolled
challenge by the Shildon number 11 drew an angry push in
response from the home number 2, provoking a gathering of the
clans. As things subsided, Mr Hible backed off, sent players
away, had a word from a distance with Mr Murphy and showed a red
card to the offender - a fair decision that did note provoke too
much argument, though JCFC would have liked to see a calming
word with the Garforth player as well. Almost immediately on the
resumption there was a yellow for the Shildon number 10 and
things calmed down. Garforth had a chance blocked, but created
another one just before the half hour, number 9 delaying his
shot as he ran into the box and going down looking for a
penalty. Mr Hible's yellow card for simulation did not raise
many eyebrows. Shildon went ahead on 33 minutes and Garforth
found the side netting with a header in added time.
The second half produced plenty of excitement, with chances,
blocks and saves abounding at either end. Garforth equalised on
58 minutes; Shildon took the lead again three minutes later,
with a strong header from a corner; a second equaliser, route 2
style, soon followed, and on 68 minutes the home substitute put
them ahead for the first time. On 77 minutes Shildon drove
forward and was fouled short and wide of the penalty area; Mr
Murphy flagged, Mr Hible blew ... just as the attacker rode the
foul and went down looking for a penalty. The Garforth number 16
received a yellow card - it was not clear whether or not there
was another as players stood over the free-kick, the card was
raised, but that may have been the finish of the caution for 16.
Two fouls in the closing stages brought yellow cards for
Garforth, but they held out for a surprise win.
There is much to admire about Mr Hible: his personality appears
cheerful and agreeable, his fitness was tested by the fluidity
of the end-to-end play and the test was passed with flying
colours. As mutn3 hinted last season, though, he does not quite
have an air of total command when things are tricky.
Nevertheless, his interventions did restore order and the match
reached a satisfactory - for Garforth at least - conclusion.
Let's hope he has an easier task this weekend.
