Michael Lowe was indeed on the large side and from Sheffield
from where Keith Hackett, another hefty referee, also hailed.
Coincidence or not, I wonder?
Mike Lowe is probably the most underrated official I can recall.
Always top notch when I saw him.
ADDENDUM: I believe the coincidence doesn't end there because I
think both were newsagents. If I am right perhaps the excess
bulk was due to too many Mars bars to help 'work, rest and play'
whilst putting the papers up in the early morning!

Mars bars in Keith's case. Probably too many business lunches.
Of a later date, Steve Dunn was also a newsagent as I remember
reading an article about him having an evening midweek game,
arriving home around 1.00am and then being up before 5.00 to get
the papers ready. Today's full timers don't know they're born!!

Jeff Winter was another official who carried a fair bulk around
with him on the field......

McNally and Lowe, little and large? ;D
TTFL - I would not have classed Jeff Winter as 'bulky' in the
same way as Hackett. However Jeff had a Teesside colleague -
Graham Frankland - who was definitely on the bulky side. In his
autobiography, Jeff commented on a conversation with Graham
following a game at Macclesfield, "his match assessor had
commented on what he thought was Graham's lack of fitness. That
was a bit rich coming from the assessor who had hardly been the
most mobile of officials during his refereeing days". Wisely
perhaps Jeff did not name the assessor!

88/89 - says it in the description.
Ian has been sharing loads of his photos, fantastic trip down
memory lane for any longer term AFCB fans. I link them here when
there is a referee in shot to keep the guys on here amused and
hopefully out of mischief for a minute or 2! ;)
