Brilliant, thanks bmb. This will provide many hours of
enjoyment. Confirmed - Mike Bidmead was indeed 'Rene' from
'Allo, Allo' and Frank Bassett is the balding chap in the centre
of the group of three. Ron Barker of Crewe passed away a couple
of years ago. Unknown ref at Oxford - Brian Daniels? I'll add
Bob Armstrong, Peterborough v Gillingham May 1974, to the 'final
games' database.

A fascinating collection indeed but I must confess that some
don't really look very much as I remember them. Funny how the
old memory can play tricks.

And Rodger Gifford has provided names as well which is good. I
must admit I only knew the Cup Final refs at first sight -
Challis, Willis, and Grey - but others are familiar with a name.
Michael Lowe was big, wasn't he?

A picture of Maurice Washer posted on Jan 25th at QPR solves a
mystery from the old RTR ISOR site. A pic appeared there of
three officials at the end of a Plymouth v Aston Villa game in
Dec 1970 but it was not clear whether Maurice was a shorter dark
haired guy or a bigger balding guy. The latest picture confirms
that Maurice was the dark haired shorter of the two officials
and the other guy must have been a linesman, possibly Francis
Bassett of Swindon (timing and geography fit) who was I recall a
fairly large chap with balding head. An absolutely fascinating
album of pictures, thank you!

Michael Lowe was indeed on the large side and from Sheffield
from where Keith Hackett, another hefty referee, also hailed.
Coincidence or not, I wonder?
Mike Lowe is probably the most underrated official I can recall.
Always top notch when I saw him.
ADDENDUM: I believe the coincidence doesn't end there because I
think both were newsagents. If I am right perhaps the excess
bulk was due to too many Mars bars to help 'work, rest and play'
whilst putting the papers up in the early morning!

Keith Hackett was a sales manager / director; Kevin McNally was
though a notable refereeing newsagent around at the same time.
