Surely the ref was wrong there. That just has to be
circumventing the LOTG. Does that not constitute flicking up a
deadball?

Nothing wrong with it at all as far as the Law goes. You can
flick a ball when taking a free kick and presumably a goal kick
is no different. The player himself didn't flick the ball up in
order to head it which is against TLOG so I can't see anything
illegal although it can be argued that it is against the spirit
of the game, however, the Lawmakers in their wisdom have created
another situation which all of us interpret differently.
I'm pleased that I have retired from all aspects of the game
apart from being a spectator!

I would regard that as circumventing the laws, otherwise a team
could just constantly do that all match or have the goalkeeper
throw the ball against a defender's head and back.
If it was penalised, I don't know which player would be
cautioned though?

---they obviously never thought it out when they made the
unnecessary change.
How can you justifiably penalise this action? The ball is in
play when the keeper kicks the ball and is then headed back to
him --- all quite legal.
Remember that football is a simple game with Laws which are easy
to understand and to implement.

Correct!
Law 13 specifically allows for a direct free kick to be taken by
lifting the ball with a foot or both feet simultaneously.
Accordingly, why would the same not apply to indirect free kicks
or goal kicks?

I don't think the debate is whether a free kick taker is allowed
to flick the ball up in general - more whether in this
particular context it circumvents the backpass law.

Well, hopefully referees will be particularly diligent in
ensuring the keeper releases the ball within 6 seconds of
catching it otherwise a change designed to speed up the game
will slow it down.
Of course it could still be a time-wasting practice if it is
headed down just in front of the keeper who doesn't pick it up
straight away.
Clearly a Law change that's not been fully thought through -
who'd have thought it ?

Every time the goalkeeper has the ball in his hands he might as
well just throw it to a team-mate to head it back to him!
If this isn't amended to outlaw it, how long will it be until
goal kicks are just kicked from the keeper's hands as a matter
of course?

That would not surprise me in the least. You have to rememebr
that ALL these Law changes are made in order to make the game
more attractive to watch.
Personally it has made me decide, after 68 years' involvement as
a fan, player, coach, manager, official and League
administrator, that this coming season will be my last because
the game has lost its attraction.
For the past 53 years I have travelled a round trip from between
240 and 560 miles in order to watch home games of my team. With
the introduction of VAR and the Law changes I can't see the
point of travelling these distances when the outcome of a game
could well be decided by someone sat over 100 miles away looking
at a screen and being surrounded by fans who are totally
confused about TLOG.
I sincerely hope that someone, somewhere will sort out the mess
and push the game back on course, however, I doubt it.
