I always remember a league cup game between WBA and Arsenal
where Trevor Massey got injured so had to be replced at half
time. Dermot Gallagher happened to be in the stands watching so
became 4O only for Matt Messias to get a calf strain in the
second half. Fortunately, after treatment, he managed to carry
on but I think that might have been the closest a top flight
game came to having two officials go off injured?
       [/quote]
There was a Premier League game with three referees. Details
are vague ... I believe it was an evening game, the late Ian
Mitchell was involved and it might have involved Crystal Palace
(but then it might not). Can anyone fill in the (considerable)
       gaps?

It was Tottenham v Sheffield United, September 1992. Howard King
was the appointed referee but withdrew late due to flu. Media
reports suggest that Ian Mitchell refereed most of the game
before himself succumbing to flu and being replaced by the other
assistant but I think the reports may have got them the wrong
way around with Mitchell replacing Pearson. Whatever the case
the assistant who completed the game sent off Sheffield Keeper
Simon Tracey for a second caution. There is footage of that
incident below and anyone familiar with either Mr. Mitchell or
Mr. Pearson or both can judge who issued the red card:

York City v Barnsley, Div. 3 North
Not quite replaced but the three officials needed two doctors to
attend to them after they collapsed with exhaustion after a
match played in continuous rain and sleet, it was only two hours
later that they were fit to leave
       H.Hartley (Bolton) referee; G.W.Gibson (Ferryhill) and J.W.Legge
       (Middlesbrough) linesmen

       Sat 29.10.1932
       Blackburn Rovers v Sheffield United
       Intense cold and lashing rain
Referee Caseley (A.J.) could not resume after 71 minutes (after
a 25 minute stoppage) and was replaced by a linesman (Berry)
Sheffield United also lost three players to the conditions and
finished with eight on the pitch
On the same day at Blackpool, Chelsea lost one player at half
time and four more after 75 minutes to finish with only six on
       the pitch
What did it take to abandon a game in those days?

Doncaster Rovers vs. Northampton Town. Referee David Axcell goes
off due to what seems like cramp but was probably a pulled
muscle. The linesmen were S.M. Astin and G.I. Grandidge and one
of them took over in the middle and subsequently sent
Northampton manager Theo Foley from the touchline.

A Northampton account also on Twitter a few days ago referred to
the game and said that Ian Grandidge took over.
