It may be just an impression but Portman Road does seem to have
had more than its fair share of referees retiring from matches
injured. I believe it has happened to Mick Russell ( perhaps
more than once ) and Grant Hegley ( his last match I think ) and
I seem to remember years ago Tony Ward, incidentally one of the
most pleasant referees I have ever had the pleasure of meeting,
going down and having to be replaced

Going back to the days before reserve/ fourth officials, on more
than one occasion the former FIFA referee Ernie Crawford ended
up running the line at Doncaster when one of the officials had
to go off. Off the top of my head I think one of the departing
officials was Keith Butcher, who pulled a muscle.
Wouldn’t be surprised. “Butch” was never renowned in local
leagues for his athleticism!

I seem to remember such an occasion at Plymouth
Would have been about 1973/74/75
I think Eric Read of Bristol was involved

In a similar instance on the last day of the season in 1986-1987
referee Alf Buksh was unable to continue - reportedly due to
heat exhaustion - and his replacement was linesman John Carter
who became a FL referee the following season. It's possible his
impending promotion was already known then but he would
certainly have been a contender and therefore considered a very
fitting replacement.
Alf Buksh was replaced during three Ipswich matches he refereed.
The final occasion was the televised FA Cup Fifth Round replay
at Anfield when he was replaced by the senior linesman Ken
Leach. The following season Leach was promoted to the FL list.
Ipswich have had more than their share of mid-match
replacements. David Rock who came on several years back has
finally made it onto the League list.
The only other replacement that I can recall who made it to the
league list was a much younger Dean Whitestone who took over
from Mark Warren during the 2002/03 season at Portman Road.
When Arthur Dimond was badly inured in a match at Elland Road in
the 1970s he was replaced by David Harwood who later had a
season as a supplementary referee.

The only time I was at a match when the referee had to be
replaced was at Selhurst Park when the oft-afflicted Pat Miller
had to be replaced at half time. After what seemed an age, the
senior AR took over, a tall chap with a slightly ungainly way of
running, and he had a good second half. I cannot remember his
name although we worked out who he was on the old RTR, but I
don't think he ever progressed. An elderly looking chap took
over as 4O, the observer perhaps?
When linesman Eric Crickmore of Plymouth pulled up in a Div 1
London derby back in the 1970s, Reg Paine of Hounslow took over
in a tracksuit. We assumed he had come over for the game with
the match ref John Homewood from nearby Sunbury. Eric had a
couple of seasons on the referees list in the 1980s and was
labelled 'Basil Fawlty' - appearance and performance - by
Malcolm Allison following a particularly difficult game at
Portsmouth.
With the absence of appointments, PL and FL refs to comment on
and VAR, why would I not be surprised if I Spy Old Refs gets a
bit of a dusting down? Good news for once! ;D

Like AT, I can only recall one occasion when the referee at a
game I was at had to be replaced. It was at Villa Park but I
can't remember who Villa were playing or who the referee was
but it must have been in the 1970s. The senior linesman who
took over was V. H Wood of Northampton, who appeared at Villa
games two or three times a season.
What I do remember was that the replaced referee had not
endeared himself to the home crowd and that Mr Wood seemed a far
more competent official and I was quite surprised that he never
made the national referees list. The other thing of course was
that it was before the days of fourth officials so a volunteer
from the crowd had to be sought as a replacement linesman and a
delay ensued whilst he was found a 'neutral' tracksuit to change
into.

I wonder if someone can help with a point that has been bugging
me on this topic, from way back. On 27 August 1960 Chelsea drew
3-3 with Wolves at Stamford Bridge (thanks to a brilliant hat
trick by Jimmy Greaves). The match report in the People (on the
British Newspaper Archive) gives the ref as "T Hanger
(Northants)", as does the excellent Chelsea history site
HTML http://www.bounder.friardale.co.uk/index.htm.
I can't currently
find a programme on eBay that shows the teams page, but the
report in the Times archive gives the referee as Tommy Dawes.
Also on the BNA is the Kensington Post report dated 2 September
which refers to "deputy referee Mr T Hanger". The "T" in these
reports is an error probably stemming from the programme-the man
in question must have been J A Hanger of Rushden, Northants who
was a FL linesman from the mid 50s to 1961/2 and a Southern
League referee from the early 50s to about the same time. I
believe his first name was Jeffrey and he can be seen doing a
Boxing Day friendly on
HTML https://www.rushdenheritage.co.uk/leisure/Rushden-Amateurs.html.<br
/>(Scroll down to the third photo on the page). I saw him a few
times doing Bedford Town matches. I think he must have done the
Chelsea v Wolves match from the start rather than coming on to
replace Dawes but I can't discover what happened to the famous
Norfolk Smiler on this occasion. Anyway it must have been a
great day for Jeff Hanger, probably the top Div 1 match of the
day and probably the most memorable of his career. And the
Kensington Post thought he was right to disallow two Chelsea
goals!

I can't help on whether Mr. Hanger refereed all or part of the
game but can say that Tommy Dawes had a number of games where he
went off injured or ill so it is possible that happened to him
during this game (or even before it). It's also possible that he
wasn't able to reach the game for some other reason and in an
era long before fourth officials the senior linesman would have
had to step up with a volunteer taking his place on the line. TV
coverage or even some match photos might help solve the mystery
but this was before televised football and match photos were in
short supply although a picture or two of that game might have
appeared in Chelsea's next home programme.

Chris Foy was replaced by Anthony Taylor during a game in 2014
between Newcastle & Swansea after being hit in the face by the
ball.

Not during a match but still a change to be noted
Southport v Shrewsbury Tue 9th Jan 1962 F.A.Cup
Tom Reynolds (South Stanley) was taken ill on the way to the
match
so senior linesman Ken Hesketh (Chester) officiated
Hesketh had been on the lino list for 13 years at that point
but never made it to the referees list
