Absolutely appalling decision for the red card. He leaves a
clear SPA (rugby challenge) go in the first half and cautions
for that .

The red card’s ruined the game as a spectacle but I don’t think
it was a howler, on the soft side for sure but if both yellows
are for different players nobody bats an eyelid. The second
yellow is a stupid challenge to make when you’re already on one.
First half wasn’t good. Foul detection all over the place.

I don’t even think it’s ruined the spectacle, it was a bang
average game lacking quality and end product and a bit of a damp
squib given the usual hype.

It’s worse than soft. It’s barely a foul. A coming together at
best. Totally swung the momentum of the game in favour of the
away team

And you would have controlled it how?
He’s only done one for waving a card, one for O’Reilly (studs on
top of foot, always a yellow), and Gravenberch twice. Second
isn’t a massive foul but it is a SPA, I missed the first. If he
doesn’t do the second the other naysayers say it’s only because
he was on a yellow. Risky challenge to make on a yellow for me.
Agree. I think the first caution was probably a bit soft, but
for the second one once a free kick was given there was zero
option but to caution and send off. The attacker would have
been away without the foul so it is pretty much textbook SPA.
If you are on a caution you just cannot make that challenge.

Don’t get what I’m seeing here. For me that’s a 100% second
yellow. Also not to mention his 4th foul of the game. First one
is soft, but that’s football.

He had 6 cautions in a game billed as a tinderbox, that's hardly
excessive, and the only vaguely debatable one is Gravenberch's
first. If we look at them all ...
Araujo for showing an imaginary card, mandatory
Gravenbirch 1 - not really sure what he has seen for that one
O'Reilly - came down on the opponent's foot, that is viewed as
mandatory
Gravenberch 2 - textbook SPA
Bouaddi - brough down opponent as he was reaching edge of area,
another textbook SPA
van Dijk - took out Cherki, SPA but could also be reckless
The only person that ruined the game is Gravenberch for making a
silly challenge when already on a caution. He knows that if he
goes for that and doesn't cleanly win the ball he is walking,
yet he still did it anyway.

Gravenberch 2 - textbook SPA
I respect your opinion but I don’t agree that Gravenberch’s
second caution was ‘textbook SPA’. It was a very subjective SPA
but it was far from clear cut.
Firstly, the foul was committed about 15/20 yards inside Man
City’s half. It’s not like Doku was speeding away from
Gravenberch when he made the challenge. He may have done AFTER
the challenge but the challenge was not a cynical tackle
breaking anything up. It was an innocuous tackle in a safe area
of the field in my opinion.
We’re now going into what do we class as ‘promising attack’.
Given where the tackle occurs and also the fact that the
Liverpool defender Jacquet would come out to Doku if he got past
him then I can’t really see that as a promising attack. That’s
not really what SPA is for is it? It’s more for those cynical
fouls when a player is breaking away from you and there may be a
potential overload. None of those apply to this situation for
me. A clear cut SPA is the Fulham midfielder that hauled down
Ouattara after about 84 minutes (I’m aware people might not have
seen it) but this does not fall into a catergory of clear SPA.
It’s very very subjective. And I would lean on the side of no
caution rather than caution.

He would have broken away from him without the foul, that makes
it SPA. Perhaps textbook wasn't the right description, but it
certainly wasn't incorrect for Kavanagh to deem that to be SPA.
I said he's off straight away as soon as the foul was given.
