Long-time lurkers, first-time posters 👋

Evening all,
We're chuffed to be the new sponsors of Rate the Ref. Plenty of
you have probably bought a whistle, a flag or a pair of boots
from us at some point over the last 40 years, so thanks for
that. We're not here to fill your forum with adverts. We're just
glad to be part of it. We've been avid lurkers on RTR for years
ourselves and love JCFC's Pyramid Patrol. A few of the team have
even had a mention in years gone by!!

From one former long-time lurker to another, welcome gentlemen,
and many thanks for your sponsorship of this most excellent of
refereeing blogs. I was very grateful to A&H for specially
importing the Molten Dolfin whistle for me, before it was put on
general sale, and which I used in the dying embers of my active
days. Its very first use was at an Arsenal Ladies Reserves
match, when it certainly made everyone sit up and take notice as
it pierced the cold Hertfordshire evening air!
My days of buying equipment are long over, but I am always
trying to encourage the younger generation to take up refereeing
- sometimes I am even successful in that! I will continue to
point new recruits in your direction. I would do so with even
greater enthusiasm if only you dropped the dreaded lanyards from
your starter packs. Lanyards are like cigarettes and drugs. If
youngsters can be kept away from the habit early enough, they
will never fall victim to the horrid things.
There is hope. I didn’t know that the EFL’s new recruit,
Northern Ireland’s Jamie Robinson, was co-owner of A&H. Footage
I have seen of Mr.Robinson confirms that, like most of the
world’s referees outside England, he is happily lanyard-free and
thus able to employ hands-free whistling, infinitely preferable
in my opinion to having one hand tied (literally) to the
whistle. Indeed the photo on your website shows him holding a
Valkeen (I think) unencumbered by the awful device. I hope he
continues the practice in England!

It is not likely to be too long before the Pyramid Patrol thread
for 2022/23 drops off the bottom of the Top Ten in the
statistics section, so I have been having a run through to
refresh my memory of some of the many diversions therein. I know
nothing of our new sponsors, other than the little I have picked
up from Google, but I noticed that in April 2023, one of my
matches (referee Jamie Rhodes) had as assistants Matthew Malton
and Luke Hood.
