Ruebyn Ricardo. Manchester City v Norwich

I’m pleased to report that Ruebyn, who Whistleblower introduced
to us a few years back looks to be progressing well. Last night
was not exactly testing but nonetheless he did well keeping a
low profile, and whilst he was a little bit on the lenient side
he did so evenly Positioned himself well to avoid interfering
with play unlike the more illustrious referee at the weekend.
Appeared to have a comfortable rapport with the players. So if
the goodness isn’t coached out of him he could become a very
good referee indeed.

Good to hear. I didn’t watch the game, but the commentary
suggested that the one card Mr Ricardo produced could easily
have been Red rather than yellow. Any thoughts?

Who knows where the boundaries lie? In the context of the game
I would say yellow was OK, it was a bit rash but it did seem to
be trying to get the ball and his feet were low, excessive force
+/-?. The one moan I had was when he failed to play an
advantage as City were breaking with te ball and then when the
City player tried to take the free kick quickly made him retake
it a few yard back; the advantage was in Norwich’s favour.

I am pleased to read this positive report. Ever since I met and
enjoyed such an enjoyable conversation with this pleasant young
man some years ago, I have endeavoured to follow his progress
which, I am happy to note, appears to be very sure and steady.

Are we criticising referees now for insisting that free kicks
are taken from where the offence occurred and not several yards
nearer the goal ? I would praise him for insisting on
correctness. Wish we could do the same with throw ins.

The criticism is that he should have given the advantage in the
first place. By not doing so he helped the team that had
committed the offence to achieve their objective of stopping a
promising move. Sometimes you have to say what is the purpose
of giving the free kick is it to give an advantage to the team
that have been offended against or to the team that did the
offending? In the spirit of the game he had the opportunity to
restore natural justice and didn't take it. There were other
examples in the game where he allowed free kicks to be taken
away from the location of the offence (as is customary
particularly when an offence occurs in the goal area or near a
touchline) the difference being that they were not being taken
quickly.
