Crewe Alexandra FC (First Team) v Shrewsbury Town FC (First
Team)

Fourth Official: Jackson, Aaron
My second sighting of the American at Gresty Road, and I was
hoping for a better performance than last time. Things didn't
get off to a good start with a faulty ticket sending me back to
the by-now long queue at the ticket office for a replacement,
and I missed the first five minutes of the game. I was not best
pleased. As I arrived, the yellow card was out for the first
time (I believe) followed quckly by another, and I began to
wonder whether Alex was digging a hole for himself with such
early cautions. However, after that, he seemed to settle and
further cards were all justified. Alex has a very demonstrative
style of refereeing and was never going to stay in the
background as Simon Mather did on my last visit to Gresty. There
was a lot of whistle and a lot of chat, but Alex seemed to
maintain a rapport with the players throughout the game which
was good. The main talking point came right at the end of the
game when the Alex netted what looked like the winner but it was
then ruled out for offside on the flag of AR2 Marvyn Amphlett.
Very similar to Old Trafford last weekend, and I suspect that
referees and ARs had been told to give offsides in these
situations, and tbh, I think the decision was correct. 1-1 was
how it ended which seemed a fair scoreline. And Alex? Well he
was certainly better than last time which is probably not saying
a lot. I do not particularly like his style of refereeing, but
that is me and I was reasonably happy with his performance this
afternoon.

He too also cautioned the Shrewsbury manager for dissent. His
style of refereeing is very interesting to say the least - takes
up some weird positions. I wasn’t impressed at all with AR1, who
seemed to give everything against Crewe.

With 80 minutes gone, I genuinely had a thought of “TTFL won’t
believe this!” - because in that time, I thought Alan Young was
fantastic. Unfortunately a controversial (and I think incorrect)
red card ruined his good day to some extent.
A pretty poor first half and a livelier second half, with quite
a physical game too - which isn’t unexpected when Cheltenham are
in town. 2 early but correct yellows followed by one for
Colchester which I didn’t actually see what the foul was for,
never mind a yellow, but, like every decision he made today,
Alan looked 100% certain. In the second half, a penalty awarded
to Cheltenham for a clear handball - there’s some complaints
that a push by Sweeney on Raggett forced the handball but I
don’t think there’s much contact there and i’m happy with that
decision. He (and team) did give a couple of those frustrating
decisions where defenders decide they’d like a free kick when
facing their own goalline. But he did also wave play on to a
couple of times where players tried to buy fouls.
I actually quite liked his style - as mentioned, a real
confidence in his decisions without an arrogance. He regularly
took 2 seconds before making a decision but I don’t mind that at
all. Strong whistling and signalling, a rarity at this level in
my opinion, and he was nicely on top of the new restart
procedures. He appeared to have quite a good rapport with
players, having a joke with Jay Williams for accidentally
blocking him off in the lead up to Colchester’s goal. There was
one moment in the first half where a ball absolutely slammed
into the face of a Cheltenham player, who did get up but Alan
was so occupied with making sure he was okay, he ended up a long
way behind play before eventually and sensibly whistling for a
concussion test.
Unfortunately, the one decision I wish Alan did spend a bit more
time thinking about was the red card. A win back by Williams
leading to him attempting to protect the ball from Cundy and
accidentally making contact with his studs on Cundy’s leg. In my
opinion, there’s not enough contact or danger to warrant a red
card and a yellow card would have been a better decision. It’s
eerily similar to the red card given to Oldham’s Scott-Morriss
in our home opener, so definitely a case of “what goes around
comes around”. I hope, like Oldham’s, our red card may be
rescinded too.
This red card then created several fracases between the players
and Alan was trying to manage a lot in the immediate aftermath.
I would have like AR2 to be more involved in helping to calm
things, rather than simply observing. His observations were
correct though, booking the main instigators Iandolo and
Tomkinson. Colchester assistant Nicky Cowley was booked at full
time, with he and manager Danny having plenty to say to Alan on
the field at full time, as well as in post match interviews -
Danny may well be hearing from the FA about some of that.
A long report today from me as I had quite a lot of reflections
and observations in that game - and whilst the red card leaves a
sour taste, I won’t ignore the rest of the match where I thought
Alan and team were very good. The saving grace is that I don’t
think the red card changed the game, with it being late on and a
draw being the fair result.

I personally think the Colchester red card was correct - there’s
never any need to have your studs that high when making a tackle
- but you’re right in saying it’s similar to the one Oldham got
the other week. I was surprised that one got overturned but, on
the basis it was, I think an appeal against today’s would likely
be successful.
Elsewhere, the Rotherham penalty looks more like a red card and
a free kick outside the area, rather than penalty and yellow,
and I don’t like the Barnet red. It might be technically correct
but I don’t think that’s a fair punishment for what he did.

I forgot to mention, Alex played 2-3 fantastic advantages, ones
I wouldn't have seen coming but worked out well.

Is the Barnet red technically correct? Kicking the ball away is
cautionable for either delaying restart or dissent. It certainly
wasn’t dissent and how can it be delaying the restart when he
was being cautioned anyway so the game can’t restart until
that’s been administered?
