seems a bit too sentimental. He's been refereeing for a long
time but I'm not sure that his international career has been
especially distinguished. I think the only major tournament he's
refereed at was the 2010 World Cup where I thought he was pretty
poor (Germany V Serbia anyone?) - I don't think he did the
Champions League final and I don't remember him doing too many
CL semi-finals, and I also don't think he's done a CL knockout
stage game this season.

To be fair hardly anyone did a champions league knock out match

A dozen of them did!
It was seemingly limited by those who had some reasonable VAR
experience but even then Mallenco wasn't used, despite
refereeing in a league that uses it.

I'd argue the European Qualifiers are more important...

I wouldn't have thought UEFA would take that view considering
it's their initiative! (I think the Nations League has worked
well and exceeded my expectations, although the qualifiers are
obviously important too.)

I'd suggest that as the Nations League is a route to qualifying
it is as equally as important as the qualifiers. I have enjoyed
the Nations League games to be honest, despite Hungary's
complete failure in them!
