John Brooks: Sunderland v Arsenal

The good old John Brooks is back!
Finally a referee clamps down on the Arsenal grapple. Pity he
didnt do anything about Rayas dissent either.

I would’ve loved Brooks to give another yellow to Xhaka there
for screaming in his face because he got penalised for a foul.

An incredibly challenging game where Arsenal have been up to
their usual antics while Sunderland have responded by behaving
like a set of petulant children.
Brooks though I believe has stood up to the task and performed
well. His authoritative style suited the game as it kept the
most control that I think any referee would have had over this.
Great call re penalty and also followed the new rules to a tee!
Update: doesn't really matter i suppose as bans are the same but
straight RC for DOGSO on the pen i think? Shirt pulling is the
initial offence?

A performance that reminded me of John Brooks 2/3 seasons ago.
Excellent performance from what I saw and he is exactly the kind
of referee needed for these types of games. A fit and firing
Brooks is arguably the second best referee we have.

I didn’t see the game but agree wholeheartedly with the second
half of that comment. Is John Brooks technically the number one
referee in the country? Perhaps not. But ask me to pick a
referee to get a handle on any nonsense and gamemanship which
frustrates us all beyond belief at times, i’d pick John.

Arteta calls the penalty against arsenal unacceptable i think he
thinks he manages a rugby team
Was the penalty on saka for holding that ended outside the box?
Also I'm incredibly biased but I do think this should have been
a penalty, slides in brings the player down gets no where near
the ball

The Sunderland penalty appears to be an incredibly poor decision
- understandable perhaps from Brooks who probably cant see that
Ballard initiates the holding, and pulls Konsa's bodyweight down
on him, but poor from Attwell not to recommend a review. The
only reason I can think for why it wouldn't be reviewed was
because of what Brooks told Attwell he'd seen, but Attwell would
presumably have had to ask Brooks if he saw the initial
infringement from the Sunderland player, at which point you'd
hope Brooks said he hadn't.

I thought Arteta was lucky to not get a second yellow
immediately for what looked like sarcastic applause in the 4th
official’s direction
Interesting how so many posters on here think it’s a penalty. I
think Ballard has been extremely clever when actually he’s doing
as much of it as the defender. An understandable enough decision
in real time but the replay is fairly clear.
Red card at the end is correct. Clearly a shirt pull outside the
area although i’m yet to see an angle showing there was anything
to penalise inside the box…
