It was good while it lasted....

Well after a quietish couple of weeks in the Premier League
regarding the officiating, we are back to normal with some
incidents from the weekend just gone.
Newcastle v Bournemouth to start with and the Newcastle fans
very unhappy with Robert Jones for not giving a free kick to
Elanga when he tangled with a Bournemouth player in midfield.
Bournemouth scored a short while later and a storm of booing
cascaded down on Jones for not giving the decision. To me, I
don't think it was a free kick and Robert Jones was right to
play on.
Brighton v Leeds - Leeds thought they had scored but a very
marginal, but correct offside decision ruled the goal out.
Brentford v Sunderland - three incidents for Thomas Bramall and
VAR Timothy Wood to adjudicate on.....first of all the
disallowed goal for the keeper being impeded. A goal was
initially given but after a long VAR check, the goal was ruled
out. Again, if this was applied consistently across the board,
very few would grumble. i thought it was a correct call.
Then a goal was chalked off for the ball being kicked out of the
hands of the keeper, again, correct. And finally, a penalty for
Sunderland after some grappling in this take your partners for a
barn dance malarkey from free kicks and corners. Spot on
decision.
So here we have three incidents in one game, all correct
decisions and yet people still moan. If you said today was a
Monday, some people would argue the case. Such is the
unforgiving nature of the world at times.
And then an incident which has caused much comment although
footage has come out that has proved the decision to be right.
Nottingham Forest v Tottenham - VAR Peter Bankes disallowed a
goal when the ball struck Williams's arm and went directly in
the goal. Under the laws, that's correct. Footage that was
unavailable to Peter Bankes proved the initial decision to be
right - opinion is divided as ever as to the veracity of the
initial footage.
Much going around in circles today, including on the BBC Sport
website, but the decision was right. See my final comment above
on the Sunderland game - all I can say is ditto. You won't
convince Nottingham Forest supporters, Williams or Oliver
Glasner that was handball and no goal.
So after the relative peace and serenity of the first few weeks,
the normal noises off make a nostalgic return. How we've missed
those. Still, the officials are performing well by and large,
and VAR is doing ok all things considered.
Now a question for all our esteemed correspondents - would you
prefer a quick, wrong VAR decision, or a slow but ultimately
correct one? That debate rumbles on.

Neither!
I would prefer that the referee’s decision was final, once the
unshakeable cornerstone of all sport.
Until technology not only shook it, but caused it to crumble
into nothing.

The uproar of a quick wrong VAR decision is greater than a slow
correct one in my opinion. Accuracy should be more important
than speed but in an ideal world we would like both to work in
tandem.

I think you must have written this before the Arsenal v Chelsea
match and the kick on the head incident. Another VAR failure in
my book. Very surprised that there has been no mention of it.
